{"id":20165,"date":"2015-04-16T09:50:00","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T08:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/04\/16\/injury-layoff-no-setback-for-sani2c-defending-champs-r2396\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:03:30","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:03:30","slug":"injury-layoff-no-setback-for-sani2c-defending-champs-r2396","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/injury-layoff-no-setback-for-sani2c-defending-champs-r2396\/","title":{"rendered":"Injury layoff no setback for sani2c defending champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2015 Nedbank sani2c women\u2019s title challenge is one defending champions Robyn de Groot and Jennie Stenerhag aim to dominate when the three day stage race from Sani Pass to Scottburgh Main beach takes place from 14-16 May despite De Groot\u2019s build-up campaign having been hampered by a plaguing shoulder injury.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-98967400-1429177727.jpg\" data-fileid=\"517352\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"517352\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-98967400-1429177727.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-98967400-1429177727.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Sweden&#8217;s Jennie Stenerhag (left) and Ascendis Health team mate Robyn de Groot (right) are relishing the opportunity to clinch a second consecutive Nedbank sani2c title when they take on this year&#8217;s race from 14-16 May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Ascendis Health duo comfortably clinched last year\u2019s title but are expecting a far stiffer challenge this time around as a richly talented women\u2019s field assembles for the 2015 contest and a hairline fracture to De Groot\u2019s clavicle has reduced her time in the saddle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the Cape Epic I\u2019ve just been working on trying to clean up as best I can,\u201d explains Johannesburg\u2019s De Groot. \u201cI had a fracture at the tip on my clavicle so I\u2019ve been trying to keep that as still as possible and have reduced to the indoor trainer quite a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see my injury as a setback though; it has just been a really good rest period for me, especially after Epic, and nor do I think it will have any impact on our sani2c.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal for sani is definitely still to try win the women\u2019s title again!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing one of the better known races in the country, even amongst those that aren\u2019t mountain bikers, it is always a nice title to win so we\u2019ll definitely look to give it our all again this year,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"grid grid-cols-12 gap-4\">\n<div class=\"col-span-6\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-75845700-1429177733.jpg\" data-fileid=\"517353\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"517353\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-75845700-1429177733.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-75845700-1429177733.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-span-6\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-50424600-1429177741.jpg\" data-fileid=\"517354\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"517354\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-50424600-1429177741.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-50424600-1429177741.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While few elite athletes are able to string together consecutive victorious efforts, 32 year-old De Groot doesn\u2019t believe there is any added pressure on her and 39 year-old Swedish team mate Stenerhag\u2019s shoulders going into this year\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often talk about the added pressure of being the defending champions but I don\u2019t look at us as being defending champions; it\u2019s a new year, a new race and a new opportunity for us to try challenge for the title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year is behind us and this year is a whole new opportunity!\u201d says De Groot.<\/p>\n<p>The understanding and mutual respect that the pair have for one another is something that De Groot believes is something that will aid in their title challenge immensely, a challenge that if successful would see De Groot claim a rare sani2c triple having successfully combined with Ischen Stopforth in 2013 as well.<\/p>\n<p>The 11th edition of the Nedbank sani2c&#8217;s gets underway when the Trail event takes place from 12-14 May 2015. The Adventure then unfolds from 13-15 May before the cream of the the country&#8217;s top mountain bikers do battle during the Race from 14-16 May.
