PPA STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER Start Groups have been included at this year\u2019s Knysna Cycle Tour which is a premier seeding event for next year\u2019s Cape Town Cycle Tour. Preferential start times have been allocated to the four Stay Wider start groups. Cyclists have to ride in the Stay Wider of the Rider jerseys which will be available at a discounted rate online from Monday 22 June on www.pedalpower.org.za.<\/p>\n

The PPA\u2019s primary role is to protect and empower cyclists. Our new STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign which launched in February this year ahead of the Cape Town Cycle Tour wants to create maximum awareness amongst all road users honing in on motorists which will hopefully lead to safer roads for our cyclists.<\/p>\n

Join thousands of supporters and pledge your support for the safe cycling campaign by riding in a \u201cStay Wider of the Rider\u201d jersey.<\/p>\n

Visibility is a key issue that contributes towards cycling accidents on our roads. The new \u201cStay Wider of the Rider\u201d safe cycling jerseys are highly visible and include the simple \u201cStay Wider of the Rider\u201d message, says chairman of the Pedal Power Association, Steve Hayward. \u201cIt is our responsibility as drivers to become more aware and tolerant of other road users,\u201d says Hayward.<\/p>\n

Statistics show that 84% of cycling fatalities on our roads are caused by cyclists being hit by a motor vehicle from behind or when a vehicle underestimates the speed of a cyclist and turns in front of the cyclist. Cyclists have almost no protection when they are involved in an accident, so by giving them adequate space on the roads, motorists can avoid accidents that can cost precious lives. <\/p>\n

The PAA launched the very successful \u2018Cyclists Stay Alive at 1.5\u2019 campaign back in 2011 which resulted in a 1 metre passing law which was promulgated in 2013 in the Western Cape. STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER urges motorists to obey the law and pass cyclists at a safe distance of at least 1 metre or more.<\/p>\n
