{"id":19542,"date":"2015-07-31T13:55:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T12:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/07\/31\/smiths-absence-throws-scottburgh-mtb-womens-race-wide-open-r3225\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T14:15:21","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T14:15:21","slug":"smiths-absence-throws-scottburgh-mtb-womens-race-wide-open-r3225","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/smiths-absence-throws-scottburgh-mtb-womens-race-wide-open-r3225\/","title":{"rendered":"Smith\u2019s absence throws Scottburgh MTB women\u2019s race wide open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2015 Sappi Scottburgh MTB Race\u2019s women\u2019s title challenge has been thrown wide open after double defending champion Hayley Smith confirmed she will not be on the start line for this year\u2019s race on Sunday, 9 August.<\/p>\n<p>With Smith having recently claimed the Under-23 women\u2019s cross country MTB national crown, many had been bursting with excitement in anticipation of the potentially fairytale occasion of a South Coast local challenging to become the first ever female rider to win the race three times in a row, in her own backyard, on her 21st birthday and on Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>The young Specialized SA\/Bell Equipment rider will however unfortunately be out of town on the day and so will sadly miss out on this unique, historic occasion.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-47876800-1438350542-1.jpg\" data-fileid=\"573841\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"573841\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-47876800-1438350542.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-47876800-1438350542-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Specialized SA\/Bell Equipment&#8217;s Hayley Smith&#8217;s absence from the 2015 Sappi Scottburgh MTB Race&#8217;s start line has thrown the women&#8217;s title race wide open. Darren Goddard\/ Gameplan Media<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my 21st birthday on Sunday and we have planned to go away for the long weekend,\u201d explains Smith. \u201cThe Sappi Scottburgh MTB Race is always such a great event and I hope this year is another fantastic race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be thinking of everyone taking part on the day!\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s absence however opens the doorway for a new champion to be crowned and join the event\u2019s prestigious group of women\u2019s race winners that already includes the likes of Team RECM\u2019s Cherise Stander, Red Bull\/Specialized SA\u2019s Bianca Haw and, of course, Smith herself.<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of Women\u2019s Day, the day is thread with special added touches for the female competitors taking part is set to line the day\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>All female competitors will lead the rest of the field through the neutral zone from Scottburgh Main Beach to Renishaw sugarcane farm, there will be a rare all-women front row on the start line while an extra special gift at the finish line awaits all ladies who successfully overcome the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Cutty Sark Hotel and the Blue Marlin Hotel are also offering incredible long weekend discounts to riders and their families for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Blue Marlin Hotel is also set to stage a Women\u2019s Day Acoustic Celebration whereby on of KZN\u2019s top bands The Kickstands, together with Home Bru\u2019d and Freddy NL, are set to perform live from 13h00 on Sunday,\u201d explained race director, Flavio Scarpa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresold tickets are R50 and R70 at the door while food and drinks specials will be available all day,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>More top class routes for the 45km Sappi Scottburgh Classic, 28km Dash &amp; Splash Intermediate Ride and 10km Dash &amp; Splash Fun Ride alike together with the day\u2019s festivities both on and off the bike make for another memorable day on KZN\u2019s South Coast.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 Sappi Scottburgh MTB Race takes place on Sunday 9 August.
