Jon Ivins\/ Hill2Hill<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s tough course in the closing stages made the lengthy day in the saddle even more challenging however the Change a Life Academy riders were up to the task as they mixed it up with some of the province\u2019s top elite competitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Sthembiso Masango to finish sixth and be in amongst the pro riders at a super tough event like Hill2Hill \u2013 the Attakwas of KZN \u2013 really is quite something!\u201d said RMB Change a Life MTB Academy founder, Martin Dreyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can wing it in a 40km or even a 60km event but over 100km, the chinks in your armour are exposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to pull off a result over that distance as a lot can go wrong and so to have seven riders inside the top 25 is just amazing!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Masango suffered a particularly long day in the saddle when a crash, shortly after the firing of the starter\u2019s gun, damaged the lock-out on his shock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSthembiso\u2019s crash meant his shock was fully locked out for almost the entire duration of the race,\u201d explained Dreyer. \u201cTo race a tough race like Hill2Hill with a rigid bike shows his resilience and tenacity to never give up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team used the Valley of a Thousand Hills \u2013 their own backyard and regular training ground \u2013 to prepare for the tough assignment, something Dreyer believes stood them in good stead heading into the contest.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-85205400-1442481796.jpg\" data-fileid=\"600101\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"600101\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-85205400-1442481796.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-85205400-1442481796.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">RMB Change a Life MTB Academy&#8217;s Scelo Mhlongo, John Ntuli, Martin Dreyer, Ndumiso Dontso, Bongumuso Zikhali, Sipho Kupiso and Sthembiso Masango enjoyed yet another strong showing at the 2015 Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill2Hill mountain bike marathon on Sunday, 13 September. Jon Ivins\/ Hill2Hill<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong rides in the valley are by no means easy as the hills are endless. The hills either become your friend or foe however the fitness of the team is such that the hills are now their friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur next focus in the Berg &amp; Bush stage race, where we\u2019ll be entering four teams, and Hill2Hill is great prep for that and also shows where guys are currently at in their fitness ranking!\u201d said Dreyer.<\/p>\n<p>Masango was closely followed across the line by fellow Academy members John Ntuli (11th), Ndumiso Dontso (15th), Sipho Kupiso (20th), Bongumusa Zikhali (22nd), Scelo Mhlongo (23rd) and Mazwi Smimango (24th), while Dreyer earned back some credibility amongst his young charges with a remarkable 18th placed effort of his own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was lekker for me to get a nice result because I\u2019ve been getting whipped in the valley by these youngsters!\u201d chuckled Dreyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is absolutely no mercy shown to the \u2018old man\u2019 during training so it was great for this \u2018old man\u2019 to earn a bit of respect back,\u201d he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>While the Academy\u2019s mountain bikers build towards their upcoming Berg &amp; Bush assignment, a 12-paddler strong Computershare Change a Life Academy squad sets off on Thursday morning for Upington in the Northern Cape where they will look to shine at the weekend\u2019s Green Kalahari Canoe Marathon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUMMARY OF RESULTS \u2013 2015 SUNDAY TRIBUNE JEEP HILL2HILL<\/strong><br \/><strong>RMB CHANGE A LIFE MTB ACADEMY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6.Sthembiso Masango 3:47.22<br \/>11.John Ntuli 3:58.21<br \/>15.Ndumiso Dontso 4:01.20<br \/>20.Sipho Kupiso 4:06.00<br \/>22.Bongumusa Zikhali 4:06.13<br \/>23.Scelo Mhlongo 4:08.29<br \/>24.Mazwi Smimango 4:09.13<br \/>34.Siyanda Masango 4:16.04<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The RMB Change a Life MTB Academy Zulus enjoyed no fewer than seven of their riders inside the top 25 of the gruelling 100km Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill2Hill mountain bike marathon that took place from Hilton to Hillcrest on Sunday 13 September, demonstrating the Valley of a Thousand Hills setup\u2019s wealth of talent yet again.
