{"id":18809,"date":"2016-01-28T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2016\/01\/28\/berg-and-bush-tackle-kzn-drought-r4046\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T08:45:18","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T08:45:18","slug":"berg-and-bush-tackle-kzn-drought-r4046","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/berg-and-bush-tackle-kzn-drought-r4046\/","title":{"rendered":"Berg and Bush tackle KZN drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of South Africa\u2019s premier mountain bike events hope to bring rapid relief to desperate KwaZulu-Natal farmers this year with a welcome donation of water tanks.<\/p>\n<p>Riders in last year\u2019s Grindrod Bank Berg and Bush were shocked by the serious drought conditions affecting private farms through which they passed, said event founder Gary Green.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur official race initiative this year is to partner with JoJo tanks to assist farmers and their staff along the route.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe riders have the option to pledge a donation when they enter online and together we will provide water tanks to help with the drought issue in an area which desperately needs aid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-64033900-1453996745.jpg\" data-fileid=\"669240\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"669240\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-64033900-1453996745.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-64033900-1453996745.jpg\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">One of South Africa\u2019s premier mountain bike race, the Grindrod Bank Berg and Bush, will bring relief to desperate KwaZulu-Natal farmers this year with a welcome donation of water tanks. Photo: Em Gatland<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Green said their commitment to social initiatives was one of several factors that made Berg and Bush a favourite among the cycling community \u2013 and one of KwaZulu-Natal\u2019s premier multistage mountain bike races.<\/p>\n<p>Comprising three separate races \u2013 the Descent, Great Trek and 2-Day \u2013 that boast wide mountain and bushveld vistas, Green believed it was one of the most beautiful in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said the route (a portion of which winds through privately-owned farms) differs each year and riders could look forward to some exciting changes.<\/p>\n<p>The original two-day race attracted just 56 participants, said Green, but word quickly spread and the numbers swelled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, after 10 years, we host just under 3 000 riders.
