Many of you are busy training for these events, especially in preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. With the increase in cyclists on the roads comes an increased risk of cyclists also being hit by a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The PPA launched a major \u2018Safe Cycling\u2019 campaign in late 2011, striving to focus attention on a safe passing distance between vehicles and cyclists. Part of this campaign means that cyclists need to know HOW and WHERE we can ride our bicycles.<br \/>Rather than asking where we can ride \u2013 what about those roads that Cyclists are NOT permitted to cycle on?<\/p>\n<p>These are either FREEWAYS or areas where Cycling Prohibited signs are displayed . Simply put, \u2018freeways\u2019 are designated as such in terms of the National Road Traffic Act. These may have different designations (N &#8211; National, R &#8211; Provincial or M &#8211; Municipal) \u2013 but if the following signs are displayed anywhere, YOU MAY NOT CYCLE there.<\/p>\n<div class=\"grid grid-cols-12 gap-4\">\n<div class=\"col-span-6\">\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-26290200-1456383047.png\" data-fileid=\"685912\" data-fileext=\"png\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"685912\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-26290200-1456383047.png\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-26290200-1456383047.png\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Designated Freeway.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-span-6\">\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-08641300-1456383104.png\" data-fileid=\"685913\" data-fileext=\"png\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"685913\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-08641300-1456383104.png\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-08641300-1456383104.png\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Cycling prohibited.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can ride on any other road where it makes sense to do so safely!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what happens if you get hit by a vehicle when you are cycling on a road where you are not supposed to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\">\n<li>Your chances of surviving are slim and, at best, you will probably be severely injured.\n<\/li>\n<li>You are committing a traffic offence and you could be charged.\n<\/li>\n<li>Your insurances may not cover you or your bicycle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Considering the above, it just doesn\u2019t seem worth the risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What then? Where and how do we ride?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We ask that motorists respect us and the laws. As cyclists we need to do the same. Only by riding responsibly where we are allowed to can we expect other road users to respect us.<\/p>\n<p>Respect the laws, respect other road users: It\u2019s a two-way street.
