{"id":18456,"date":"2016-03-23T18:45:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T18:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2016\/03\/23\/2015-tour-durban-win-opens-international-door-for-gibbons-r4438\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T08:29:49","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T08:29:49","slug":"2015-tour-durban-win-opens-international-door-for-gibbons-r4438","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015-tour-durban-win-opens-international-door-for-gibbons-r4438\/","title":{"rendered":"2015 Tour Durban win opens international door for Gibbons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While 2015 aQuell\u00e9 Tour Durban winner Ryan Gibbons has confirmed he will not be on this year\u2019s start line on Sunday 24 April to defend his crown, the 21 year old says that his win last year opened many new doors in his cycling career.<\/p>\n<p>While disappointed to be missing out on a title defence opportunity, Gibbons is relishing the chance to take on the world\u2019s best in some of Europe\u2019s finest road races having been snatched up by the Dimension Data for Qhubeka Continental Team for the 2016 season shortly after his aQuell\u00e9 Tour Durban success last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very disappointing not to be able to be a part of this year\u2019s Tour Durban, especially having won last year!\u201d explained Gibbons. \u201cI love that race and it is always one of my favourites on the calendar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite there being some great races here in South Africa like the Tour Durban, it is everyone\u2019s ultimate goal to race overseas and I\u2019m very excited about the next six months,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div style=\"\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-25687100-1458758869.jpg\" data-fileid=\"700408\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"700408\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-25687100-1458758869.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-25687100-1458758869.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">2015 aQuell\u00e9 Tour Durban winner Ryan Gibbons (Dimension Data Continental) won&#8217;t back to defend his title this year as he tackles an exciting six month racing stint in Europe, a trip he attributes greatly to his aQuell\u00e9 Tour Durban success twelve months ago. Anthony Fitzhenry\/ Gameplan Media<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gibbons, who departs for the Northern Hemisphere on Saturday, famously etched his name onto the winners list when he edged out many of his more fancied rivals in the hotly contested end sprint of the 2015 aQuell\u00e9 Tour Durban title.<\/p>\n<p>Despite still being just 20 years old, the result soon saw the youngster head-hunted by the Dimension Data for Qhubeka Continental Team \u2013 the feeder to the UCI World Tour registered outfit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoining Dimension Data has been massive for me and my win at last year\u2019s Tour Durban definitely played a big role in setting me up for this incredible opportunity,\u201d said Gibbons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve months ago I never would have imagined where cycling would take me!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo win a high profile race like the Tour Durban really helped me gain confidence and belief in my own ability though and to win an end sprint like that also helped me prove to sponsors and teams that I can cope with the pressures that come with that sort of racing scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Gibbons expects to be joined by much of his Dimension Data team mates for the duration of his European adventure, that includes assignments such as the Coppi e Bartali in Italy and the Under-23 equivalent of the Tour of Flanders in Belgium, he is hopeful two of his Dimension Data Continental team mates will tackle this year\u2019s Tour Durban in his absence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNic Dlamini, who is a very good rider, and Bonaventure (Uwizeyimana) \u2013 our rider from Rwanda \u2013 may possibly be around to race Tour Durban for us,\u201d speculated Gibbons.<\/p>\n<p>Normal entries can be submitted online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cycleevents.co.za\/road-events\/aquelle-tour-durban-2016\/\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.cycleevents.co.za\/road-events\/aquelle-tour-durban-2016\/<\/a> until 22h00 on 11 April, after which late entries will be taken at registration at Suncoast Casino &amp; Entertainment World from 10h00-17h00 on Friday, 22 and Saturday, 23 April.
