I’ve been to Durban a few times to train for my first Supercross World Cup and my body feels good – I hope to stay healthy and injury free.”

Dodd and Alex Limberg missed the first UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Argentina last weekend so the Manchester event, which is the second in the UCI World Cup Series, will be their first.

Dodd says that the Lahee Park track will be quite challenging for the Elite riders. “I last raced there in 2009 and a lot has changed since then. Obviously, I’m going about 10 times faster now,” he laughs. “It’s a downhill track on the side of a mountain, so the speeds are really fast, which makes it more difficult because the jumps are small. It’s a track that has been built more for the younger guys, so it could prove tricky for the pros.”

Speaking about the local competition this weekend, Dodd said: “Since my injury, a lot has changed. There’s a full gate of guys who have got faster and stronger, so it definitely won’t be a walk in the park. I hope to stay on the bike and get clean laps. A rider like Alex Limberg and I have our own battles and Dylan Eggar (first year Junior) is climbing the ranks quickly. They’ve jumped so many levels to where we are in a very short space of time.”

Kyle Dodd has recovered well from his hand injury and will be back in action at the 2016 SA BMX National Age Group (NAG) Series Legs 1, 2 and 3 at Lahee Park BMX Club, Pinetown, from 2-3 April.

Coach Jonnathan Chislett explained the preparations that have been underway to get the riders ready for the World Cup. “They’ve been training at Giba Gorge on the Supercross start hill and have travelled up and down from Johannesburg to Durban a few times this year.

“Last year, with Kyle’s serious injury, we took time off from the international races and now we are building towards these again. When he broke his wrist, he suffered ulnar nerve damage and lost a lot of mobility in his hand. We used the Prime Performance Institute for healing at Moses Mabhida and worked closely with SASCOC doctor, Dr. Suban, because we weren’t sure if he would ride again after seeing the nerve specialist. Dr. Suban has done tremendous work and Kyle is back up to speed and 100% now.

“Alex keeps on growing – he is still young and was a late developer but his strength work is coming through now.
