{"id":18271,"date":"2016-04-25T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-25T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2016\/04\/25\/punctures-settle-stage-four-of-joberg2c-r4656\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T08:21:22","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T08:21:22","slug":"punctures-settle-stage-four-of-joberg2c-r4656","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/punctures-settle-stage-four-of-joberg2c-r4656\/","title":{"rendered":"Punctures settle stage four of joBerg2c"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Punctures played a huge part in the outcome of the men\u2019s and mixed sections on the 93km fourth stage of the 900km Old Mutual joBerg2c that finished at Emseni outside Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, today.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"w-full aspect-video\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V3igZIGA0QU?feature=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Men\u2019s leaders Johann Rabie and HB Kruger, who left Sterkfontein Dam with a one second advantage, were able to extend their lead to more than three-and-a-half minutes after NAD Pro\u2019s Gawie Combrinck and Nico Bell cut a tyre.<\/p>\n<p>The Telkom duo won the stage, which culminated in a maize field, in 3:03:14. Photo: Full Stop Communications<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The overall situation going into the 122km fifth stage from Emseni to Nottingham Road will be Rabie and Kruger (15:05:07) leading Combrinck and Bell (15:08:49), with Thule-Pyga-TIB\u2019s Andrew Hill and Tyronne White (15:23:45) in third.<\/p>\n<p>The field of around 800 riders were faced with a spine-tingling drop off the escarpment as they raced into KwaZulu-Natal via the Great Wall My China and Sollie\u2019s Folly single-track descents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey (Combrinck and Bell) went very fast on the downhill and I think they cut a tyre there,\u201d said Rabie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were about 10 seconds ahead of us at that point as we decided to take it slightly easier on the technical sections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the bottom we caught them and then I saw Gawie\u2019s wheel was busy deflating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGawie stopped to plug the leak and we just maintained a steady tempo. Photo: Full Stop Communications<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rabie said they then went flat-out over the final 20km and were able to open up the lead.<\/p>\n<p>In the Lanham-Love Attorneys mixed section, Britain\u2019s Catherine Williamson suffered three punctures to slow her and teammate Johan Labuschagne\u2019s progress with The Bicycle Company-Bestmed pair falling to second in the overall standings.<\/p>\n<p>The stage was won by Dorma-USN-Purefit\u2019s Darren Lill and Candice Neethling in 3:24:15 (16:17:30), who consolidated their third place overall in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Valencia-Lanham-Love\u2019s Grant Usher and Amy McDougall were a close second in 3:25:16 (16:01:12) to retake the lead they had lost the previous day.<\/p>\n<p>Although Topeak-Ergon\u2019s Yuki Ikeda (Japan) and Sonya Looney (United States) were third on the day in 3:30:59 (16:24:24), they were unable to bump Labuschagne and Williamson, who came home in 3:35:34 (16:04:31), off the bottom step of the podium.<\/p>\n<p>Lill, who won the three-day Berg and Bush alongside Neethling in the same area last year, said she was struggling a bit on day two and three.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-01564200-1461590892.jpg\" data-fileid=\"717359\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"717359\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-01564200-1461590892.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-01564200-1461590892.jpg\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Dorma-USN-Purefit\u2019s Darren Lill (front) and Candice Neethling win stage four of the 2016 Old Mutual joBerg2c between Sterkfontein Dam and Winterton. Fortunately, we knew we were going to drop off the escarpment today and come a bit lower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said they wanted to be in a good position heading into the single-track before the big descent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe worked pretty hard to stay with the front men\u2019s group actually.
