{"id":18138,"date":"2016-05-20T06:10:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T05:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2016\/05\/20\/call-for-nominations-for-2016-jack-cheetham-and-letsema-awards-r4825\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T08:14:03","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T08:14:03","slug":"call-for-nominations-for-2016-jack-cheetham-and-letsema-awards-r4825","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/call-for-nominations-for-2016-jack-cheetham-and-letsema-awards-r4825\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for nominations for 2016 Jack Cheetham and Letsema Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Murray &amp; Roberts, in partnership with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), is once again calling for nominations for the annual Jack Cheetham and Letsema Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are divided into two categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Jack Cheetham Memorial Award \u2013 initiated by Murray &amp; Roberts 35 years ago in recognition of the special qualities of Jack Cheetham, a former director of the company and the inspirational captain of the South African cricket team in the 1950s \u2013 targets sports development projects for able-bodied individuals;\n<\/li>\n<li>The Letsema Awards \u2013 launched in 2009 \u2013 targets sports development projects for sports people with disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Previous winners of the prestigious annual Awards include Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy and Freestate Sports Association for the Physically Disabled in 2014; and Waves for Change and Wheelchair Tennis South Africa in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-77841300-1463724573.jpg\" data-fileid=\"730019\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"730019\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-77841300-1463724573.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-77841300-1463724573.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Murray &amp; Roberts, in partnership with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), is once again calling for nominations for the annual Jack Cheetham and Letsema Awards. Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jclawards.co.za\/\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.jclawards.co.za\/<\/a><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for nomination, a sports project must demonstrate a meaningful contribution to the development of sport in South Africa and must benefit previously disadvantaged individuals. Nominations in all sporting codes are considered but preference is given to sporting codes that do not attract high levels of funding. Factors such as sports excellence, inspirational leadership and future sustainability are important criteria to adhere to.<\/p>\n<p>Organisations that have previously won the first prize in either category may only be nominated again in the year after they receive their final payment.<\/p>\n<p>The value of the 2016 awards will be allocated as follows, for both the Jack Cheetham and Letsema Award:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Winner R500 000 over five years;\n<\/li>\n<li>Runner-up R150, 000 over three years;\n<\/li>\n<li>2nd Runner-up R 75, 000 over two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The closing date for the Jack Cheetham and Letsema Awards nominations is 1 July 2016.
