I’m going out there this weekend to do my best, and my main goal is to make a quarterfinal and from there progress as far as possible. For now, I’m keeping focused and doing my sprints whilst helping out the other South African riders with anything they need on their race days.”

Part of Team Management and Masters competitor, Tyrone Johns, spoke of his Colombian experience so far. “Colombia has been an experience of note – after a very long flight we made it to an incredible hotel that has everything we need. One of the hardest things over here is to communicate, as very few people speak English and we don’t speak Spanish, so miscommunication happens a lot.”

Johns said that Tom Ritz built the track, the same builder of the Giba Gorge combination track, which has a lot of similar features and suits the South Africans’ riding.

“The atmosphere is great at the track and the Colombians do know how to party so the music is loud and the crowd is loud,” continued Johns. “The racing is going to be fast and tough as we don’t get to race a lot of South Americans often. It’s going to be interesting and I am really relishing the opportunity to represent my country again and make everyone at home proud.”

Kyle Dodd, Tyrone Johns and Tim O’Brien were selected for the National Team.
