<\/a>Pietermaritzburg based road and track cyclist Darren Goddard has laid down the gauntlet to other riders around the country as he challenges them to be the first solo rider to complete the 100 Miles of Nowhere challenge in aid of CHOC at Cadence Cycling Performance Centre’s across South Africa on Friday, 24 June. Darren Goddard\/ Gameplan Media<\/span><\/p>\nRiders will be able to monitor the progress of other riders on screens set up at the Cadence Centres throughout the country and Goddard is challenging all other solo riders nationwide to race him in being the first rider to cross the 100 mile (160 kilometer) barrier.<\/p>\n
\u201cI watched the guys riding last year and just loved the craziness of the challenge, it’s absolutely insane and beyond what any average person would try and accomplish,\u201d the instructor at the Pietermaritzburg Cadence Centre mentioned. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen chatting to one of our PMB Cadence riders, Mark Gutridge, I jokingly said if he sponsored the entry, I would ride it solo. <\/p>\n
\u201cSuddenly a few hours later I was entered, so I thought – why not!\u201d<\/p>\n
Goddard is involved in the shaping the lives of young children on a daily bases which has meant that the work of CHOC and The Cows is close to his heart.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have followed the work of CHOC and the crazy exploits of the Cows over the last few years and as someone who works in the mental health field with children and families, I have a lot of respect for what they do.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is awesome to do something crazy and fun to help raise some extra funds for them!\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
With all of the venues filling up rapidly taking on the solo challenge will be an impressive feat in itself with over 160 kilometres of riding and getting other hard core riders involved is Goddard\u2019s aim after he threw out the challenge.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have just always been overly competitive, even if it is just against myself – I love the challenge of going faster and further and new adventures.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have also heard that there is a team of pro riders joining up in Cape Town, so I want to see how my numbers match up to theirs and see if I can keep up,\u201d a keen and enthusiastic Goddard commented.<\/p>\n
Supporting such a worthwhile cause is at the heart of 100 Miles of Nowhere\u2019s five year campaign to date and Goddard believes that the event offers something different for riders from both a challenge and social perspective so he encourages all riders to take up the challenge.<\/p>\n
\u201cStep out of your comfort zone and do something crazy for an awesome cause,\u201d he encouraged.
