{"id":17619,"date":"2016-09-15T12:50:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T11:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2016\/09\/15\/sani-dragon-joins-hands-with-lettie-love-fund-r5558\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T07:41:03","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T07:41:03","slug":"sani-dragon-joins-hands-with-lettie-love-fund-r5558","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/sani-dragon-joins-hands-with-lettie-love-fund-r5558\/","title":{"rendered":"Sani Dragon joins hands with Lettie Love Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Organisers of the Fedauto Sani Dragon, in association with Mortimer Toyota, have joined forces with the Lettie Love Fund ahead of this year\u2019s race on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October in an effort to raise awareness of and funds for cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>With normal entries for the two-day mountain bike race having closed on Friday 26 August, the event \u2013 which includes the unique opportunity for participants to summit the famous Sani Pass by bicycle \u2013 has committed to donating the entry fees of the first ten late entries to Zoog Haynes\u2019 organisation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-46169200-1473944070.jpg\" data-fileid=\"802496\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"802496\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-46169200-1473944070.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-46169200-1473944070.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">The entry fees from the first ten late entries ahead of this year&#8217;s Fedauto Sani Dragon, in association with Mortimer Toyota, will be donated to the Lettie Love Fund. Greg Labuscagne Photography\/ Gameplan Media<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very excited to welcome Zoog and his Lettie Love Fund on board,\u201d says co-race organiser, Spurgeon Flemmington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our ten late entries agreement, we hope to donate over R20 000 to his fantastic initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also create a \u2018Pink Mile\u2019 during the event that will see Zoog covering the post and rail fence at the Underberg Farmers Association\u2019s Showgrounds in pink, to help create a bit of cancer awareness as well,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Started as a means of raising funds during Haynes\u2019 wife, Nikki \u2018Lettie\u2019 Haynes\u2019 fight against cancer, the Lettie Love Fund has since grown into an organisation that provides a door-to-door transport service to currently disadvantaged cancer patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority of cancer patients out there either don\u2019t get to their treatments or get there in a compromised and undignified manner,\u201d explains Haynes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the provision of a personalised \u2018lift club\u2019 travelling daily into the townships and areas where these people are, we hope that we can get more people to treatment and we can eliminate one of the major headaches these folk have \u2013 access to transport and mobility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody should have to fight more than their illness in order to get to a place where they can get care,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between the Fedauto Sani Dragon and the Lettie Love Fund was one that had been bubbling under for some time however fellow Sani Dragon organiser, Eileen Downing\u2019s young son\u2019s recent diagnosis of leukaemia was the eventual trigger in the formalisation of the association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite never actually meeting properly before, Zoog and I had crossed paths on many occasions over the years and so I was well aware of the Lettie Love Fund and the incredible work it does,\u201d says Flemmington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a race, we\u2019d been talking about developing a relationship with Zoog and the fund for a while, especially as the Lettie Love Fund is one our Fedauto Sani Dragon audience knows well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Eileen\u2019s son\u2019s diagnosis three months ago, we realised that we\u2019ve got to stop just talking about this partnership and start making it all happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The race\u2019s contribution is one the Lettie Love Fund is immensely grateful for and comes as a timely injection of funds ahead of the festive season \u2013 a period where the pinch on many people\u2019s pocket sees contributions to the fund slow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re fired up to be involved in the Fedauto Sani Dragon!\u201d says Haynes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny opportunity we get to spread the Lettie Love Fund word we grab with both hands and to be able to cast the net that little bit wider in search of some funding is also massive for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, that amount from the ten late entries that the race has been unbelievable in agreeing to donate to our cause will keep us going for approximately three months, which is massive for us, especially as we head towards Christmas!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really are very grateful for this incredible opportunity the guys at the Sani Dragon have given us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 Fedauto Sani Dragon in association with Mortimer Toyota takes place on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October.
