Photo: Jetline Action Photo.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>Smit crossed the finish line 2:25:19, nearly 40 seconds ahead of Telkom\u2019s Nolan Hoffman, who edged out reigning Cape Town Cycle Tour champion and Smit\u2019s team-mate Clint Hendricks in the bunch sprint.<\/p>\n<p>As Smit predicted ahead of the race, the climb up Hekpoort about 30km from the finish proved decisive.<\/p>\n<p>He paid tribute to his team for placing him in the right position to allow him to launch an attack at that stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race was very fast until Hekpoort when my team set me up for the win, for which I\u2019m so grateful,\u201d said Smit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m quite a big guy and so it takes me a while to get going, but I managed to get a gap halfway up Hekpoort and built up a lead of about 50 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom there, with about 25km to go, it was a matter of staying mentally strong and I managed to go solo to the finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smit, who has set himself the target of winning the individual time-trial at next year\u2019s national champs, said he was very happy with his form ahead of next month\u2019s 947.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Satellite Classic victory was an important scalp for any professional and something he wouldn\u2019t have been able to achieve without his team\u2019s support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a well-established race so it\u2019s great to get the win. You never really know in professional racing when these things are going to happen so you have to take every opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have so much to thank my team for because these guys train just as hard as I do and make it possible for me to achieve what I have. So I never take anything for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lise Olivier, of Time Freight, took the honours in the women\u2019s race when she outdragged Ethiopian Eden Hailemariam to the line in 3:02:55.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-54336200-1477165735.jpg\" data-fileid=\"825720\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"825720\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-54336200-1477165735.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-54336200-1477165735.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Time Freight\u2019s Lise Olivier sprints to victory in the Bestmed Satellite Classic at Saloon Route 66 near Hartbeespoort Dam on Saturday. Photo: Jetline Action Photo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hailemariam was credited with a time of 3:02:56, with Bestmed-ASG\u2019s Andrea Steyn completing the podium in the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The 33-year-old Olivier, who hails from Menlo Park in Pretoria, was delighted with the outcome. Like Smit, she also went clear over Hekpoort and built an advantage of 45 seconds before being reeled in with 15km to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really thrilled to get the win. There were several attacks before I was able to open a gap up Hekpoort,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this eventually closed and in the end it came down to a sprint finish in a group of about seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bg-slate-100 p-5\">\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold\">Provisional results:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Men<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>106km<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.
