A short ride on the tar, to cross the R554 before the cyclists turn off the hard shoulder and head into the “bush” for the next 26 – 52Km (30 and 60Km route respectively). Throughout the 30Km route, the 60Km riders will branch off and ride a combination of single and jeep track before rejoining the 30Km route. As with the road race having a figure-of-8 route, the district road and railway lines form the backbone of this event, mixing flat and fast terrain with bits of single track, jeep track, and limited amounts of technical terrain.

After 14,5Km the route heads onto the district road where cyclists can cover a lot of distance in a short period of time. It is predominately downhill (150m descending by water point 1 – 19.5 – 22.6Km). Immediately after water point 1, the two routes split. The 60Km continue straight on the district road before completing a 16.4Km route on farm roads, single track and jeep track along the railway line. The 60Km route has an intermediate water point (33.9Km) before it rejoins the 30Km route at their 39Km point.

The route then continues along the railway line, before what we consider the hardest part of the route – a short, punchy climb up to another district road. The route splits again with the 30Km proceeding straight while the 60Km follows the district road for 5Km before rejoining the route again.

Water point 2 (the 3rd one for the 60Km) greets riders as they circle back off the railway line road and onto the bridge over the railway line. The route splits again, with the 60Km doing about 100m of elevation gain to the finish (14.5Km), while the 30Km has 78m of elevation gain to the finish (7.7Km).

The routes merge at 3.5Km to go, and there should be sufficient space for riders to pass. The final 700m is inside Carnival City, and completes the 6Km circuit inside their grounds. A cold recovery drink from 32GI, as well as food and drinks for sale at the hospitality area will be available for all participants.

Road race – 06 November 2016

If one looks at the 103Km route, it resembles a figure-of-8 shape, with the other distances using part of (65Km), or doubling back on (125Km), the route. The 65Km uses the first half of this shape, while the 125Km incorporates a smaller loop within the first half.

All rides start 500m west of the entrance to Carnival city, and ride along the R554 towards Alberton. After 10.3Km, the route turns left at the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary before another left turn, 2.5Km later, onto the R103. On newly tarred roads, and prevailing tailwinds, this usually results in a fast section to the 21km point where cyclists turn right onto the Magagula Heights road, and passing water point 1 at the 24Km mark before passing the lowest point on the route at 28Km (just passed the Montic Diary farm). At this point, cyclists have descended 213m, with only 114m elevation gain.

The route then turns left and slowly climbs back up to the starting elevation (1618m asl). At the 39.4Km mark, the 125Km route turns left on the R103, and heads back towards Alberton for 5.2Km before turning left on the Magagula Heights road and repeat the same loop, passing water point 1 and Montic Dairy Farm. They turn left as before onto the R550 and back to the R103 intersection where they turned left for the extra loop. From this point, all 3 distances continue straight along the R550 towards the R23, passing the first hotspot (all licensed groups in 125Km and 103Km are eligible). At the R23, the route splits with the 125Km and 103Km turning right towards Heidelberg, while the 65Km turns left to return to Carnival City to complete the upper loop of the figure-of-8 (more about this once the 103Km returns to this point). The 103/125Km route will now start the lower loop of the figure-of-8 shape and complete the upper half later.

A steady drag up to water point 2 takes the cyclists to the same height as the start (1625m asl) which is then followed by a fast 3Km descent into Heidelberg. The route then undulates on the R42 to Nigel for 13Km, before a left turn on the M63 that passes water point 3. After 2km the route turns left on the R550 back to the R23 where cyclists will complete the bottom loop of the figure-of-8. Halfway along the 10Km ride along the R550, cyclists will pass the Diduza township and the highest point on the route (1650m asl), before passing the second hotspot on the next uphill before the turn to the R23.

Once the 103Km and 125Km have turned right, cyclists are on the same approach to the finish as the 65Km route (that had previously turned left at 48Km). Water point 4 is 2Km up the road, before the final 13Km to the finish line. Prevailing winds make this a tough section as it could be a cross-headwind from either the left or right shoulder, or even a head wind.

The final left turn is 1Km from the finish, and the final 1% gradient catches both elite and amateur cyclists when contesting the sprint. Go too early, or too late and you could lose it on the line. 150m after the finish line, cyclists will be ushered into Carnival City to enjoy the post-race hospitality, collect their medal and a refreshing drink.

Online entries for the 33rd edition of the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic (CCMNC) close today (26 October) at 23:00.
