{"id":17077,"date":"2017-02-17T13:10:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T13:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2017\/02\/17\/exxaro-jersey-winners-to-get-trip-to-elite-sports-academy-r6154\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T07:11:08","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T07:11:08","slug":"exxaro-jersey-winners-to-get-trip-to-elite-sports-academy-r6154","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/exxaro-jersey-winners-to-get-trip-to-elite-sports-academy-r6154\/","title":{"rendered":"Exxaro jersey winners to get trip to elite sports academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The contest for the Absa Cape Epic\u2019s prestigious Exxaro Special Jersey just got a whole lot more intense with news that the winners will get to spend eight days at an elite sports performance academy in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>The Bakala Academy in Leuven, Belgium, has joined hands with the Cape Epic in the race\u2019s bid to encourage and advance its development category.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-66520100-1487336997.jpg\" data-fileid=\"901386\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"901386\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-66520100-1487336997.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-66520100-1487336997.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Dom Barnardt. Sportzpics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Exxaro Special Jersey is awarded to the top historically disadvantaged South African team where both riders are under the age of 26.<\/p>\n<p>The jersey was introduced in 2012 and the Cape Epic has launched a number of initiatives in the past year to increase entries in this category and to encourage closer racing. The number of entries has more than doubled in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Absa Cape Epic chief executive officer Lynn Naud\u00e9 said she was \u201cdelighted by the Bakala Academy\u2019s generous contribution \u2026 this will give the Exxaro race a huge boost\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The jersey winners will get to fly to Leuven in June and spend eight days at the academy doing testing and training. They will also get to interact and spend time with the Etixx Quick-Step professional cycling team, which is based in Belgium and uses the academy to improve its performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExxaro already give the winning team R50 000 to further their studies and this opportunity is the cherry on top of a great incentive for these young riders to do well,\u201d said Naude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA stay at a world class academy will have massive benefit in terms of improving the cyclists\u2019 performance as well as providing a memorable life experience for historically disadvantaged South Africans that they would otherwise not be able to experience,\u201d said Naud\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-47788900-1487336991.jpg\" data-fileid=\"901385\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"901385\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-47788900-1487336991.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-47788900-1487336991.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Bakala Academy describes itself on its website as an \u201cathletic performance centre\u201d and a \u201cresearch and testing centre of excellence\u201d. It has a reputation as a world-class academy for research, innovation and education in sports.<\/p>\n<p>It has three main initiatives: \u201cOur Department of Research and Development is the core of the Academy and the place where all the innovations are being born. Our team works on developing innovative methods to enhance sport performance. The Education Centre will attract scholars with diverse backgrounds in the fields of sport and science. It provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge that will have a direct benefit to the sport development. And last, in our Athletic Performance Centre every athlete will find the right advice for his\/her personal purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naud\u00e9 added: \u201cThe Absa Cape Epic is the only race that has a category dedicated to development teams and with these initiatives we want to celebrate our next generation of star riders. Sportzpics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In August last year the Absa Cape Epic announced that it would be growing the category beyond its existing base \u2013 many of which came from the Exxaro MTB Academy \u2013 to include participants from academies in Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape.<\/p>\n<p>Naud\u00e9 announced that the race had formalised an arrangement with the Diepsloot MTB Academy in Gauteng, the Change A Life Academy in KwaZulu Natal and Songo.Info from Stellenbosch in the Western Cape and each would receive two free team entries to the 2017, 2018 and 2019 races.<\/p>\n<p>Another 10 entries were also made available to sponsors, charities or others who might want to enter a team in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Bakala have agreed to host the Exxaro jersey winners for the next three years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The contest for the Absa Cape Epic\u2019s prestigious Exxaro Special Jersey just got a whole lot more intense with news that the winners will get to spend eight days at an elite sports performance academy in Belgium.
