{"id":17021,"date":"2017-03-05T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-05T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2017\/03\/05\/howard-grotts-and-jennie-stenerhag-claim-cape-town-cycle-tour-mtb-challenge-titles-r6216\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T07:07:41","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T07:07:41","slug":"howard-grotts-and-jennie-stenerhag-claim-cape-town-cycle-tour-mtb-challenge-titles-r6216","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/howard-grotts-and-jennie-stenerhag-claim-cape-town-cycle-tour-mtb-challenge-titles-r6216\/","title":{"rendered":"Howard Grotts and Jennie Stenerhag claim Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Howard Grotts (Specialized) outclassed Christoph Sauser (Specialized) and Matthys Beukes (PYGA \/ Euro Steel) to win the Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge at Le Bonheur Wine Estate in a time of 02:08:08.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old from Colorado in the USA had arrived in South Africa less than three days before, but showed no ill effects of the travel. \u201cI just got here and haven\u2019t felt the jet lag too bad,\u201d he commented afterward. \u201cIt\u2019s always good to start on a good note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 55-kilometre route with some 1250 metres of climbing featured some of the finest trails in the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy including purpose-built trails by Meurant Botha through the farms of Knorhoek, Delvera, Warwick, Quin Rock, Delheim, Muratie and Uitkyk. Conditions on the day were cool, with scattered cloud cover and a light breeze, making for perfect racing conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-82037900-1488733366.jpg\" data-fileid=\"912125\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"912125\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-82037900-1488733366.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-82037900-1488733366.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Photo credit: Sam Clark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The pace was hot right from the start with all the main protagonists represented in the front bunch of about eight riders. Beukes set the pace early, making his intentions clear, with the likes of Lourens Luus and David George, in the bunch with Grotts and Sauser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatthys threw in a really strong effort on probably the longest climb on the course,\u201d Grotts said. \u201cAfter that it was just him, Christoph and myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Grotts the trails rode dusty, but not overly loose. \u201cThese are the dustiest trails I\u2019ve ridden all year,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of rain in the States so the trails have been super tacky over there, and it was nice to slide around a bit today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grotts, Sauser and Beukes rode together through the spectacular singletrack trails of Knorhoek, and it was after the last spectator point \u2013 with less than 20 kilometres to go \u2013 that Beukes tried to break up the final big climb of the day. \u201cI went with him, counter-attacked and managed to get away,\u201d Grotts said. \u201cFrom there it was just a full on effort to the finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grotts stayed away with Sauser and Beukes finishing just over a minute back.<\/p>\n<p>If Grotts rode alone for the last part of the race, women\u2019s winner, Jennie Stenerhag (CBC\/\u00c5bro), spent all morning alone. Stenerhag led from start to finish to successfully defend her title ahead of the South African duo of Mariske Strauss and Cherie Redecker.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-76674700-1488733322.jpg\" data-fileid=\"912124\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"912124\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-76674700-1488733322.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-76674700-1488733322.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge Women&#8217;s winner Jennie Stenerhag.
