{"id":16930,"date":"2017-03-23T14:25:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-23T14:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2017\/03\/23\/lucrative-prize-money-for-winelands-encounter-r6329\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T07:03:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T07:03:38","slug":"lucrative-prize-money-for-winelands-encounter-r6329","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/lucrative-prize-money-for-winelands-encounter-r6329\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucrative prize-money for Winelands Encounter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A high-quality field will again be racing for a lucrative prize purse when the Liberty Winelands Encounter takes place in the Western Cape next month.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-58780-0-91480100-1490279316.jpg\" data-fileid=\"923752\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"923752\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-58780-0-91480100-1490279316.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-58780-0-91480100-1490279316.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Presented in partnership with STANLIB, race organisers have put together an attractive purse of R100 000 for the three-stage mountain bike race, which starts in Stellenbosch on April 21 before moving to boutique race villages at Franschhoek and Wellington<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paying tribute to the input from the title sponsors, ASG Events chief executive Wynand de Villiers said they felt it was a substantial package which had already attracted some top riders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of prize-money, very few events boast this kind of purse so we are thankful to Liberty for making this possible for the competitors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had a host of top riders who have entered as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the leading contenders who had entered, he said, was Sweden&#8217;s Jennie Stenerhag who, with partner Esther S\u00fcss, currently leads the Cape Epic women\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the split, De Villiers said the purse would be shared equally among the men\u2019s, women\u2019s and mixed categories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in an equal society, so we believe that is the way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prize-money in each category will be R18 000 for the winners, R10 000 for the runners-up and R5 500 for the third-placed teams.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in the Liberty Winelands Encounter, in partnership with STANLIB, will be racing for an attractive overall purse of R100 000. Photo: Full Stop Communications<\/p>\n<p>While De Villiers said there was naturally a focus on attracting top riders, they also acknowledged the importance of providing a race which everyone could enter and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Winelands Encounter is definitely a race for everyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou obviously need to be a relatively skilled and experienced rider to complete the event comfortably, but it\u2019s by no means just shaped around the pros.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He described the race as the fastest growing three-day mountain bike race in the country and felt the overall package was full value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have taken part in a number of three-stage offerings and the Encounter offers the best on all fronts,\u201d said De Villiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe package includes world class venues, the beautiful Winelands scenery and routes that don\u2019t have their equal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that entries were filling up fast, with the cap set at 250 teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date we have 220 entries and there is a strong spread across all the categories.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A high-quality field will again be racing for a lucrative prize purse when the Liberty Winelands Encounter takes place in the Western Cape next month.
