{"id":16421,"date":"2017-09-15T13:35:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T12:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2017\/09\/15\/national-team-announcement-for-road-world-championships-r6864\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T06:27:11","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T06:27:11","slug":"national-team-announcement-for-road-world-championships-r6864","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/national-team-announcement-for-road-world-championships-r6864\/","title":{"rendered":"National Team announcement for Road World Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cycling South Africa announces the National Road Cycling Team that has been selected to participate in the 2017 UCI Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway, from 17 to 24 September.<\/p>\n<p>The blue-ribbon event will kick off with the Team Time Trial, whereby competitors compete as part of their trade team. Thereafter, for the Individual Time Trial and the Road Races, riders will participate in their national colours.<\/p>\n<p>The Time Trial is scheduled to take place in Bergen and surrounding areas, with the Men\u2019s Elite race finishing atop Mount Fl\u00f8yen. It will be the first time that a World Championship Time Trial finishes on top of a mountain. The climb will be brutal on a 3.4-kilometre stretch with an average gradient of 9.1%.<\/p>\n<p>The Road Races will start in \u00d8ygarden and riders and spectators alike will celebrate the Norwegian coastal culture. The highlight of the race is the climb up \u201cSalmon Hill\u201d towards Mount Ulriken.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold\">National Team for the 2017 UCI Road World Championships (NOR)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Elite Men:<\/strong><br \/>Daryl Impey<br \/>Reinardt Janse van Rensburg<br \/>Jaco Venter<br \/>Willie Smit<\/p>\n<p><strong>U23:<\/strong><br \/>Stefan de Bod<br \/>Nicholas Dlamini<br \/>Morne van Niekerk<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elite Women:<\/strong><br \/>Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio<br \/>Heidi Dalton<br \/>Chane Jonker<\/p>\n<p><strong>Junior Men:<\/strong><br \/>Devin Shortt<br \/>Ryan Terry<br \/>Jason Oosthuizen<\/p>\n<p><strong>Junior Women:<\/strong><br \/>Ashleigh Parsons<br \/>Tiffany Keep<br \/>Elne Owen<br \/>Nadia van Niekerk<\/p>\n<p>Heidi Dalton, Jaco Venter, Nicholas Dlamini, Stefan de Bod and Tiffany Keep have withdrawn from the team due to personal reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Cycling South Africa Road Commission Director, Bosseau Boshoff, said: \u201cThe World Championship route will suit a rider like Daryl Impey \u2013 it is not a climber\u2019s course, but more of a sprinter\u2019s course. When speaking to Robbie Hunter, he explained that the finish is likely to see a big group sprint, as the climbs are not difficult enough to split the race open.
