{"id":15688,"date":"2018-11-02T13:40:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T13:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2018\/11\/02\/beers-botha-take-stage-1-on-dramatic-day-of-racing-r7606\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T05:37:50","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T05:37:50","slug":"beers-botha-take-stage-1-on-dramatic-day-of-racing-r7606","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/beers-botha-take-stage-1-on-dramatic-day-of-racing-r7606\/","title":{"rendered":"Beers, Botha take Stage 1 on dramatic day of racing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A day of incident-filled racing ended with South African duo Matt Beers and Wessel Botha (Team NAD) overcoming two punctures to finish Stage 1 of the FNB Wines2Whales Shiraz with a healthy lead of nearly three minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-78793400-1541165952.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1350322\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1350322\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-78793400-1541165952.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-78793400-1541165952.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beers and his 19-year-old partner had to chase back and catch Under-23 cross country world champion Alan Hatherly of South Africa and his Danish teammate, former Junior World Champion Simon Andreassen (Spur Specialized), over the last quarter of the 67km mountain bike course.<\/p>\n<p>Beers said afterwards that he had flatted on a section of gravel road about halfway through the ride and before the compulsory portage of more than a kilometre up the Gantouw Pass. \u201cWe plugged it and got back to Alan and Simon on the portage, but just before the tech zone (at Water Point 3 on 50km) the plug came out again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-00581300-1541166013.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1350324\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1350324\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-00581300-1541166013.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-00581300-1541166013.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the tech zone they swopped Beers\u2019 wheel and began chasing after Hatherly and Andreassen, who had left the water point nearly a minute-and-a-half ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw them in the distance and I could see that Alan\u2019s lights were going out,\u201d said Beers. The lanky South African said \u201cAlan never ever rides second\u201d but was following Andreassen through the trails and falling back \u2013 a sure sign that he was in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also know that he comes alive again after about 10 minutes so I said to Wessel \u2018we must go now\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-58639100-1541165883.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1350315\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1350315\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-58639100-1541165883.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-58639100-1541165883.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hatherly was struggling with a \u201csugar low\u201d and said that Andreassen was \u201cvery patient when the lights went out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt good on the portage up Gantouw Pass. I trained for it so the run was not that bad, but I think the headwind on the A2Z (trails immediately after the pass) got the best of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-96875800-1541165658.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1350309\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1350309\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-96875800-1541165658.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-96875800-1541165658.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beers and Botha pushed hard for the finish and the youngster said afterwards: \u201cWhen Matt said we had to go I had to dig deep, but fortunately we got away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They swept across the line in 2hr 56min with Hatherly and Andreassen 2min and 56 seconds behind them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just had to work through (the bad patch) to minimise damage. I came back a couple of kilometres from the end,\u201dsaid Hatherly afterwards.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-70944700-1541165838.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1350314\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1350314\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-70944700-1541165838.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-70944700-1541165838.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andreassen said he had struggled a little bit with the pace early on after a long season but then got into his rhythm. \u201cThe trails were really cool \u2026 I like loose corners and sandy stuff,\u201d said the Dane.<\/p>\n<p>Riders had to overcome a strong headwind and some dusty conditions, but all were complimentary about the course and the trails.<\/p>\n<p>It was a good day for NAD, with their second team of Nico Bell and Gawie Combrinck coming home third 6 mins 24 secs behind the leaders.<br \/>\u201cI struggled up the first climb but from there it was better,\u201d said Combrinck. \u201cI\u2019m really happy that Matt and Wessel took the win today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arno du Toit and Tim Hammond (SPOT Africa) finished fourth, eight minutes behind the leaders and Belgian mountain biker Frans Claes and road rider Jasper Stuyven \u2013 who finished fifth at the Paris Roubaix classic this year\u2013 another 16 seconds back in fifth.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-89565900-1541166078.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1350325\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1350325\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-89565900-1541166078.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-89565900-1541166078.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was quite ill two weeks ago,\u201d said Claes. \u201cToday I still felt it and in the second half I was nearly dying.\u201d He added that Stuyven, not being a mountain biker, struggled a bit on the trails: \u201cOn the singletracks we lost a few seconds and had to fight back, which also made it tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relatively short and fast stages on the FNB Wines2Whales mean that it is unlikely the leading two teams will be caught. However, Saturday\u2019s Stage 2 around Grabouw and Elgin should suit the cross country skills of Hatherly and Andreassen and give them an opportunity to close the gap on the leaders before Sunday\u2019s final stage to Hermanus.<\/p>\n<p>As Hatherly said at the finish: \u201cThere\u2019s still two days of racing \u2026 it\u2019s not over until it is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Top team PYGA Eurosteel was a late withdrawal from the FNB Wines2Whales Shiraz this morning when Philip Buys\u2019s wife went into labour. The former Olympian flew back to Gauteng for the birth this morning while partner Matthys Beukes watched the start at Lourensford Wines Estate. \u201cThis morning we woke up to exciting news \u2026 that Philip\u2019s wife had gone into labour,\u201d said Beukes. \u201cHe got on the first flight home to Pretoria.
