In 2018, this iconic event was won by New Zealand\u2019s Sam Gaze (Specialized). Gaze went on to famously win the elite men&#8217;s race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Stellenbosch the following weekend.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-14550500-1551342134.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1439400\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1439400\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-14550500-1551342134.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-14550500-1551342134.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a>[c<br \/><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Photo credit: Chris Hitchcock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For the Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge win, Gaze out-sprinted his Specailized Factory Racing teammate Howard Grotts (who would later win the 2018 ABSA Cape Epic with Jaroslav Kulhav\u00fd) and Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon\u2013Circus) who had a stellar season on the 2018 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup to finish second overall. The rest of the top 10 included the likes of Florian Vogel, as well as South Africa\u2019s Matthys Beukes and Phil Buys (Pyga-Euro Steel) and Gert Heyns from Team DSV.<\/p>\n<p>The likes of Gaze and Simon Andreassen \u2013 who will be riding the Absa Cape Epic with Christoph Sauser for Investec-songo-Specialized in support of Grotts and Kulhav\u00fd \u2013 will be on the start line again come 2 March. So too will be our own Alan Hatherly, who, among a list of other accolades, won the U23 UCI XCO World Championship in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never actually managed to make it down for the MTB Challenge or the Cycle Tour for that matter,\u201d Hatherly said. \u201cThe timing has just never worked out for me to do it previously so am quite stoked to do it. Photo credit: Mike Rose.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the women\u2019s race, the racing promises to be just as competitive with a whole host of big names lining up as a final shakedown ahead of the Absa Cape Epic.<\/p>\n<p>Three-time defending champion Jennie Stenerhag will be back. She crashed during her dominant performance last year which unfortunately put her on the sidelines for much of last season. She is now back to full fitness and hungry to defend her title.
