Hatherly\u2019s Specialized Factory Racing teammate Simon Andreassen rounded out the podium, some 10 minutes back.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s race saw Candice Lill (Summit Fin) outclass South African compatriot Mariske Strauss (Silverback) and three-time defending champion Jennie Stenerhag (Fairtree\/\u00c5bro). She rode a perfect tactical race, leading from early on to control the race all the way to the finish in a time of 02:33:48.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold\">At the sharp end<\/h2>\n<p>Conditions on Saturday 2 March were cloudy and cool in the Simonsberg Conservancy, perfect for racing. \u201cI\u2019m really happy with the win,\u201d commented Hatherly, who won the Under 23 Cross Country World Championships in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-02201700-1551533409.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1441099\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1441099\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-02201700-1551533409.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-02201700-1551533409.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like Matt and I pretty much controlled the race from the start,\u201d he said, explaining how they had studied the profile the previous evening and targeted the big climb at 28 kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>A group of six riders got away from the start, which included previous champion Howard Grotts as well as Daniel Geismayr (Centurion Vaude). \u201cWe kept our heads down until that climb and then worked to split the group,\u201d Hatherly said.<\/p>\n<p>They managed to get away, with only Geismayr and Andreassen staying in touch. \u201cWe knew that if we sat up the guys behind might recover and get back on. There were quite a few little kickers after that and also a lot of little devil thorns on the route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-34164400-1551533427.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1441100\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1441100\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-34164400-1551533427.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-34164400-1551533427.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Geismayr suffered a bad puncture with around 20 kilometres to go leaving Beers and Hatherly to fight it out at the front, with Andreassen chasing solo. \u201cI think a lot of guys were struggling with slow leaks, including myself,\u201d Hatherly said. \u201cI was on the rim and had to put a CO2 bomb in it and pray the sealant was going to hold and that I could hang on to Matt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the thorns, Hatherly was more than complimentary of the route. \u201cKudos to Meurant (Botha) or producing beautiful trails,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s champion Candice Lill (Summit) \u2013 also winning in her first ever outing at the event \u00ad\u2013 echoed Hatherly\u2019s sentiments, \u201cIt was an awesome route,\u201d she said, explaining how 60-kilometres is not a distance she normally races. \u201cIt is either a shorter cross-country style event or longer like at the Absa Cape Epic, so I knew I had to pace myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-58689900-1551533441.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1441101\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1441101\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-58689900-1551533441.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-58689900-1551533441.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lill led from early to win ahead of Mariske Strauss and three-time defending champion Jennie Stenerhag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw a lot of people go too fast early on and there was still a lot of pedaling to the line so you had to stay strong all the way to the end,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very happy with the way I rode today and happy to be taking this form into the Cape Town Cycle Tour next weekend \u2013 for which I am really excited \u2013 and then the Absa Cape Epic in two weeks\u2019 time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-42384100-1551533467.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1441102\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1441102\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-42384100-1551533467.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-42384100-1551533467.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold\">A day for all<\/h2>\n<p>While the pros spent less than three hours on the amazing trails the day really belonged to all the weekend enthusiasts across the 20km, 40km, 60km routes. \u201cFantastic day for mountain biking,\u201d commented David Bellairs, Media, Marketing and Sponsorship Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. \u201cWe had over 2200 participants across the distances and the weather played into our hands fantastically \u2013 overcast, with some rain coming down towards the end to keep the dust down.
