{"id":15416,"date":"2019-07-07T06:55:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-07T05:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2019\/07\/07\/atherton-and-bruni-take-tight-downhill-victories-in-vallnord-r7875\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T05:19:16","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T05:19:16","slug":"atherton-and-bruni-take-tight-downhill-victories-in-vallnord-r7875","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/atherton-and-bruni-take-tight-downhill-victories-in-vallnord-r7875\/","title":{"rendered":"Atherton and Bruni take tight downhill victories in Vallnord"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Riders toed a fine line on the boundary of grip in finals at the Vallnord Mercedes-Benz UCI Downhill World Cup, but winners Rachel Atherton and Lo\u00efc Bruni found perfect balance in front of a roaring Andorran crowd.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-97191300-1562482485.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542115\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542115\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-97191300-1562482485.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-97191300-1562482485.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The course, being raced for the sixth time at World Cup and World Champs level, had deteriorated throughout practice and qualifying and was left full of holes and loose dirt.<\/p>\n<p>One man to succumb to the dangers was Aaron Gwin, who smashed into a tree with his shoulder late in Saturday\u2019s practice session, leaving the American unable to make the start for finals.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-44849200-1562482272.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542112\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542112\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-44849200-1562482272.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-44849200-1562482272.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Tracey Hannah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Due to her crash in qualifying, Tracey Hannah, series leader going into this race, was on course early in the women\u2019s finals. She nailed the flatter upper sections of the track and kept her focus through the hardest, steepest mid-section. Unfortunately, a momentary lapse in concentration saw her crash out close to the finish line, but she still ended the day in third.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-60157500-1562482211.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542110\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542110\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-60157500-1562482211.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-60157500-1562482211.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Rachel Atherton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It took a while for anyone to come close to Hannah\u2019s powerful run but once Rachel Atherton got on track it was clear that, bar a major mistake, she was set to take the lead. Atherton bettered Hannah\u2019s upper section and stuck to her lines through the tricky steeps, eking the most out of the hill right up to the finish. Atherton took the hotseat and the day\u2019s win.<\/p>\n<p>Atherton said: \u201cIt was a super-hard track. Everyone was struggling and everyone was going super-fast. I knew it was going to be on the limit and I was riding real on-the-edge at the bottom section. I can\u2019t believe I stayed on!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-25080100-1562482208.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542109\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542109\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-25080100-1562482208.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-25080100-1562482208.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Marine Cabirou.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Marine Cabirou, who won the Junior World Champion title here in 2015, was clean and fast down the entire course, reclaiming time to Atherton in the middle sections of the track and finishing just 2.4s behind her at the finish. This impressive ride would earn Cabirou her career best Elite result, ending the day in second.<\/p>\n<p>A wild ride from fastest qualifier Nina Hoffmann saw her crash out and lose a shoe midway through her run, but 2019\u2019s up-and-coming star rider commendably battled on regardless, crossing the finish line to the applause of the day\u2019s winners.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-43318100-1562482204.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542108\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542108\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-43318100-1562482204.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-43318100-1562482204.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Emilie Siegenthaler, Marine Cabirou, Rachel Atherton, Tracey Hannah, Eleonora Farina stand on the podium at UCI DH World Cup in Vallnord, Andorra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The French are unstoppable in men\u2019s downhill this season, and it wasn\u2019t going to end here. The bar was set high early on by 2013 Vallnord winner Remi Thirion, who took the hotseat.<\/p>\n<p>It took most of the session for Thirion\u2019s time to finally fall, with riders making small but costly mistakes in the unforgiving dust, some crashing out completely. Finally Brook Macdonald proved there was still more to come from the current fastest riders in the world, and from there on in the pace went through the roof.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row grid grid-cols-12 gap-4\">\n<div class=\"col-span-6\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-34589600-1562482392.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542114\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542114\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-34589600-1562482392.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-34589600-1562482392.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Remi Thirion.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-span-6\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-32073800-1562482390.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542113\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542113\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-32073800-1562482390.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-32073800-1562482390.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Brook Macdonald<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>2018\u2019s winner Loris Vergier was absolutely electric, getting loose in the dust but remaining upright and precise, smashing the current leader\u2019s time and looking absolutely unbeatable.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-73119200-1562482489.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542117\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542117\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-73119200-1562482489.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-73119200-1562482489.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Troy Brosnan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Troy Brosnan had a good go and was up on Vergier\u2019s time at the first split, but lost a little further down the hill. Nonetheless, Brosnan put in a clean and brilliant run, finishing just 1.2s slower than Vergier and once again stepping onto the podium in third; \u2013 he hasn\u2019t been outside the top three all year.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure was on Lo\u00efc Bruni as last man down the hill, but the top qualifier and winner of two World Cups already in 2019 matched Vergier\u2019s speed and added even more finesse, slicing his way through the roughest sections of the track. Bruni perhaps took fewer risks in the steepest sections, but he&#8217;d made up time in the earlier parts of the run and crossed the finish line to make it the first male repeat winner on this track and his third win in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-05581800-1562482488.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542116\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542116\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-05581800-1562482488.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-05581800-1562482488.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Lo\u00efc Bruni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bruni said: \u201cIt was super-scary, honestly. I had a pretty good top [section] and I was talking to myself like \u2018OK, it\u2019s good,\u2019 I felt faster than yesterday\u2026 I had so many close calls with trees, with braking points and I held on. It\u2019s super-tight again, but I\u2019m so happy. It was really good racing and I\u2019m stoked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-96638600-1562482535.jpg\" data-fileid=\"1542118\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"1542118\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-96638600-1562482535.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-96638600-1562482535.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Amaury Pierron, Loris Vergier, Loic Bruni and Troy Brosnan, Danny Hart stand on the podium at UCI DH World Cup in Vallnord, Andorra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bruni now holds the men\u2019s series lead by a 65-point margin from Troy Brosnan. Rachel Atherton narrows Hannah&#8217;s lead to 30 points in the women\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>In the Junior races, Vali H\u00f6ll upped the ante from qualifying and stomped her fourth Junior Women\u2019s win of 2019 with a time good enough for fourth in Elites.
