Voting’s all done and our May winner has been chosen! Congratulations to Grebel for his shot “Between the tapes”.

The result and an audit of the votes

If you were following the voting the winner announcement may be somewhat of a surprise. After the voting closed on Friday we did a quick run through votes to ensure no foul play. In the process we discovered a few suspect votes. Upon further investigation we found no less than 34 fraudulent votes. I.e. where one individual used more than one account to cast a vote. This of course had a significant impact on the outcomes of the vote.

As at 12pm on Friday the top 5 were as follows:

  1. 09 May 2014: Wits Wall Riding, the best playground in JHB – 66 votes

  2. 25 May 2014: Between The tapes – 63 votes

  3. 01 May 2014: Rail or Fail – 41 votes

  4. 19 May 2014: Greg Minnaar on the rocks – 37 votes

  5. 22 May 2014: Max the Weimaraner and Single Track! – 35 votes

After removing the duplicate votes the final standing looked like this:

  1. 25 May 2014: Between The tapes – 56 votes

  2. 09 May 2014: Wits Wall Riding, the best playground in JHB – 35 votes

  3. 19 May 2014: Greg Minnaar on the rocks – 33 votes

  4. 22 May 2014: Max the Weimaraner and Single Track! – 33 votes

  5. 01 May 2014: Rail or Fail – 29 votes

While there were one or two chance takers voting more than once (people with existing duplicate accounts for business / personal use), there was one individual who racked up 30 fake votes. We’re still investigating and connecting the final dots, but will make an announcement regarding further action soon.

Going forward

Moving ahead we’re rethinking our approach to the competition. Unfortunately the public vote is open to manipulation, whether that be in the form of fake votes or simply a case of who can rally the most support.

At this stage we’re looking at an independent panel of 5-10 judges to select a monthly winner. However I’d appreciate any comments in this regard.

Word on the street is that he was on fire! So he had to stop, drop n roll.

I heard the same story, so it must be true!

Something to do with excessive speed and his nylon shorts catching fire

@ Admin:

I guess the voting format all depends on what the objectives of the competition are? If it is merely about generating interest around the GoPro product and hits for the website then I think it is fine as it is. As can be seen plenty of 'discussion' already happening.

However if GoPro is after the best picture (in terms of focus, composition etc) then maybe the system needs to be changed. Perhaps keep the format as is to determine the top 5 pics and then a GoPro rep chooses the winner from those?

Best of both worlds?

Was never about that. Was about the Forum Members' favourite pic.

Matt summed it up in this thread when there was last unheavel about the whole thing.

Though on an aside @Matt - when going to look at the submissions - would it be possible to filter by current month entries versus archived ones.

I agree here. Should be a condition of the competition that the pics need to have been take in the month that they were submitted.

I hear you and agree. However, Matt's summary was after round two of the compo. After this last round he suggests that there may be a change in the voting system - hence this debate.

So in my mind that means one of two things (or both) - otherwise why suggest changing things.:

  • The sponsors are unhappy with something.
  • Admin is unahppy with something.

Just my thoughts...

And the answer to that is... the way the vote has been manipulated through false accounts. That's fraud, plain and simple.

Peach.

I agree with the general public voting and the top 5 go to admin or the GoPro agents to decide on the winner
