Winner of the Photo of the Day, May 2014

Voting’s all done and our May winner has been chosen! Congratulations to Grebel for his shot “Between the tapes”.

The result and an audit of the votes

If you were following the voting the winner announcement may be somewhat of a surprise. After the voting closed on Friday we did a quick run through votes to ensure no foul play. In the process we discovered a few suspect votes. Upon further investigation we found no less than 34 fraudulent votes. I.e. where one individual used more than one account to cast a vote. This of course had a significant impact on the outcomes of the vote.

As at 12pm on Friday the top 5 were as follows:

  1. 09 May 2014: Wits Wall Riding, the best playground in JHB – 66 votes

  2. 25 May 2014: Between The tapes – 63 votes

  3. 01 May 2014: Rail or Fail – 41 votes

  4. 19 May 2014: Greg Minnaar on the rocks – 37 votes

  5. 22 May 2014: Max the Weimaraner and Single Track! – 35 votes

After removing the duplicate votes the final standing looked like this:

  1. 25 May 2014: Between The tapes – 56 votes

  2. 09 May 2014: Wits Wall Riding, the best playground in JHB – 35 votes

  3. 19 May 2014: Greg Minnaar on the rocks – 33 votes

  4. 22 May 2014: Max the Weimaraner and Single Track! – 33 votes

  5. 01 May 2014: Rail or Fail – 29 votes

While there were one or two chance takers voting more than once (people with existing duplicate accounts for business / personal use), there was one individual who racked up 30 fake votes. We’re still investigating and connecting the final dots, but will make an announcement regarding further action soon.

Going forward

Moving ahead we’re rethinking our approach to the competition. Unfortunately the public vote is open to manipulation, whether that be in the form of fake votes or simply a case of who can rally the most support.

At this stage we’re looking at an independent panel of 5-10 judges to select a monthly winner. However I’d appreciate any comments in this regard.

Wow! I just got the news. Thank you to everybody that voted! Every pic that was submitted and made the finals was a potential winner. As for making it "fair".... I'm not sure that I have the answer for how to do that.

I do agree with Armpies though. The initial selection process goes through a panel. Thereafter it is up to the community to decide the winner. I think Brogue explained it quite well. My vote is to leave it as it is. Just keep an eye on the phantom votes. (Interesting to see that the top 5 were all docked a few votes.....)

I don't for one second consider myself a photographer. I am a weekend warrior with an old entry level setup that enjoys taking pictures. Always trying to learn new tricks and techniques. At the end of the day, any form of artwork is open to interpretation. My good picture/painting/sculpture might be your waste of time and money. That's how things go and you are more that entitled to your opinion.

Good luck to all the June entrants. I will be back at the beginning of July to cast my vote and it would be great if more people got involved in the voting process.

Thanks again guys

THE WAY I SEE IT, AS SAID ABOVE DOUBLE/FAKE VOTING IS OUT

IF YOU FEEL YOU NEED HELP TO WIN ASK A FEW MATES, I HATE TO BREAK IT TO ALL YOU HIGH HORSE RIDING MOANING MURTLES, BUT THIS IS HOW PRESIDENCY IS WON, I THINK A SIMPLE COMPETITION CAN BE WON THE SAME, IF ITS A *** PHOTO AND YOUR MATE WANTS YOU TO VOTE,,,BE A ADULT AND SAY NO YOUR PIC SUCKS

GROW UP AND STOP MOANING LIKE CHILDREN

THIS COMPETITION IS AWESOME, IT BRINGS PRODUCT BRAND VALUE UP, HUBBERS HAVE A GO AND THE MOST VOTES WIN

IF THERE IS A PANNEL HOW WOULD THE MASSES FEEL ITS FAIR??????????

THIS IS A COMMUNITY PEOPLE SOME TIMES I JUST SHRUG MY SHOULDERS

every joe soap has a chance to win a camera for free and you still moaning like biatchas unfreakingbelievable

Well done Grebs!

I personally don't think you should change how the voting is, other than to just verify that there aren't any fake accounts created solely for the purposes of winning. As far as what I see it, the sole purpose of this competition is to promote The Hub and GoPro, and the more people you can get involved the better. So going in the direction of a panel for voting will defeat the purpose.

Like all things in life, it doesn't count to just have talent, you need to work to get to the top. And those people that work to get to the top, end up getting there. You can take any competition that is running on any social media and the person that's the most popular wins, whether it being that they just have that many friends, or if they go out and promote themselves and trying to win.

Hilarious reading some peoples views on this - canvassing votes should result in disqualification? Hahaha...

Yes, let's give the good folk from GoPro as little "exposure" as possible. Sshhh, don't let anyone else know about the comp. In fact lets create some fake accounts to rack up some more votes without drawing any more attention to our kind sponsors.

Surely the more legit people who follow the comp the merrier? Surely people still can make up their minds as to what pictures they like? And if someone asked you to vote that you don't know, you can just vote for their opposition, or, god forbid - for the best pics!

In my personal opinion, Grebel's pic would not have been my first choice, but it did get one of my 3 votes.

At first glance I didn't think much of it, but it is definitely a picture that grows on you. There is a great sense of anticipation, the black and white sets a great mood and then that leads you to examine the image in greater depth. You start thinking of riding lines, how the berm is holding up to the racing, you even think of all the hard work and many days that goes into making such a great berm... then you hear the whistles, the cow bells - the blasting vuvu's. It's world cup time and Mr Minn is on his way!

My other two choices were Greg Minnaar on the rocks - a cracking example of professional sports photography! Pictures like that don't just happen!

And then Max the Weimaramer - man that photo makes me smile

A minimum post count of say 20, sounds reasonable for potential voters and should scare off would be cheats!

Thanks to GoPro for this awesome comp!*

*And please be sure to vote for my pic in the next month, should I actually submit one, should it actually be chosen and should it actually be worthy of your vote :whistling:

Maybe the way forward is to have the photos submitted anonymously, and the ID of the poster only revealed after voting has closed?

seems like there's enough debate on it that not everyone's happy, sure some of it might just be sour grapes!!

Voting

Vote for your top 3 images by selecting them in the poll area above. You must choose 3 in order to submit the vote.

pity it's become a popularity contest requiring campaigning to win. I want to see brilliant photos winning. Suppose being a semi-pro doesn't even get you to the shortlist if you don't pitch in and motivate why yours is best!

ps. but in general the photos have been cool, even if the 'best' one doesn't win.. keep sending them in guys!

I see your picture was selected for today's pic. So you're saying that you're just going to sit back and hope that you may get the most votes? Or is your competitiveness going to kick in and you're going to try to garner as much support? I would think that as someone that's keen on the more extreme challenges that sports have to offer, that you're more than likely to pick the latter option. Just my 2c.

schweeet, they must have lots entered then went in a while ago. But no, I won't be running a campaign on the hub to win a competition on the hub.

ps, if anyone knows the rider in the pic, i have the original for him if he wants a copy.
