Video: Fat bike Friday – fad or future favourite?

By Nick · 32 comments

Fat biking is a hot topic in cycling at the moment with manufacturers scrambling to get their own big tyre beast to market. As with many new trends in cycling, there is still much debate over the long-term usefulness and sustainability of fat bikes. We asked some local industry experts their thoughts on the future of fat biking.

Lekker - Enjoy

DEFINITELY do a tubeless conversion. Took me forever, lots of sealant, some insulation foam plus a few trips to SupaQuick's compressor - def worth it. And get the widest tyres you can. I was on 4.9's and they floated up and over almost everything.

Will do, planning to go tubeless from day 1, I got a nice video clip on how to do the tubeless thing and yes, looks as if the Silverback comes with 4.7's, so will stick with them!

Now just to wait untill the shipment arrives and hopefully that is before the December holidays!!

A few off my phone... others on the waterproof happy snapper at home.

Best thing about fat tyres? Can make the bike stand by itself for photos!!

Nice pics

How does it compare to a normal mtb on the beach?

Theirs. Both for logistics (finish race, get beer, get on plane) and because I suspect we will do several river crossings (BB et.)

Interesting that the majority of these 'forward thinking experts' cannot see beyond sand and snow when it comes to these bikes. My guess is Mannie, Victor and Grant are the only ones who've actually ridden them. They're not limited to sand and snow and are a huge amount of fun on 'typical' SA trails too.

Grant and Pat summed it up well for me. Fun bikes. Everything's a fad until it's not.

Good point. I ride mine on dirt roads and with the other guys on their 29ers. I get some chirps from some fellow riders but they go quiet when I ride away from them. I agree with you, these bikes are definitely not just suited to sand and snow. In fact my average speed is 1 kmph less comparing with my 29er on the same route. I love the geometry and Specialized have made their fat bike a real racer....
