Tokai and Silvermine to remain closed to the public

By Press Office · 762 comments

In the interest of public safety, as well as for the protection of the environmental integrity of the Silvermine and Tokai sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), park management decided that these two areas will remain closed to the public until further notice.

TMNP management understands that users are eager to access these areas, however they remain very sensitive and unsafe, and public use of these areas are off limits due to:

  • Smouldering and burning vegetation still needs to be extinguished and flare ups will occur as stumps and roots burn.
  • Standing trees that have been burnt or damaged by the fire are extremely dangerous as they continue to come down in the area.
  • Recently burnt veld (as well as adjacent areas) is hazardous as the fire will have burnt roots underground and foot falls may cause serious injuries.
  • Unstable slopes may result in rock falls
  • Winds and rain may exacerbate the danger with respect to falling trees, branches, rock falls and mudslides
  • Hazardous clear-felling operations of the burnt plantation trees are underway by Cape Pine
  • Disturbance to surviving animals
  • Burnt areas are sensitive as windblown seeds can be damaged and the first emerging plants can be killed by accidental trampling
  • Disturbance to sensitive erodible soils

The closure of the burnt areas will be continually assessed and reopening will only be considered once all safety and environmental issues have been addressed. For some areas this may take between six to twenty four months.

TMNP management and staff would like to assure the public that their focus is to secure the areas for the public’s safety and to as quickly as possible rehabilitate the affected sites for future use.

Please assist us by being patient and please remain out of all burnt areas while mother nature heals herself.

Ok I wasn't there so I'll take your word at face value.

But the rudeness is really uncalled for.

You clearly not interested in understanding what went wrong so we leave you to it.

Ime it's national sport to blame gov departments. Sometimes it's true a lot of the time it's not. Just saying

Hold on. No no panties will be drawn at the dawn of crack here.

If anyone is to blame it would be me. I have been asking the questions and I should have known better that the term "Silvermine" would be the one spilt into east and west. Truth is I know their strategies and especially the area manager's crafty answers, I could have kicked myself to think it was a straight answer..

All very well but he was asked directly in our previous meeting "when will we be able to ride at Silvermine again?".

The answer was September. He knew what we were asking, who we were asking for and why we were asking.

It isn't your fault he didn't answer truthfully, he chose not to.

Simple.

We asked the right question, they didn't supply the right answer.

I have spent hundreds of hours of my own time dealing with them and other TokaiMTB issues and it pisses me off when someone with absolutely no clue as to what has been said and done makes a stupidly incorrect statement and puts it across as fact.

There really is no need for you or Deon to defend yourselves.

What most of these keyboard warriors don't care to even consider is how much time and effort you guys have put in just to allow us the right to come back. Whatever you do will not keep some from having some sort of 1 upmanship.. got 60km of trail? If you had any sense you would have got 65... blah blah..

SANparks don't care if we ride there again. They will all get paid the same whether we do or don't and this just creates work for them. On a whole they will benefit financially, but jo bloggs dealing with this earns a salary and doesn't ride so doesn't care.

All I would like to say is THANK YOU for your patience and the huge amount of planning and effort you guys have put in.

I think everyone should do the same instead of bashing away uninformed and unwarranted.

You're just over sensitive as usual. Maybe that comes out negatively in your meetings with San parks.

We all on the same side so understanding when something goes wrong is in everyone's interest.

Thanks for your honesty deon. So what's the plan going forward? Any ideas for fast tracking?

Yes your in depth knowledge of the meetings is shining through really well.

You are nothing more than a small time troll who has nothing of value to add.

This is clearly more of the same baiting now, Raptor, which started with your post here. (which you much editted after the fact to remove the incriminating bits) Is there something you want to get off your chest more directly without the personal insults coming out the side of your mouth? You very clearly seem to have the shiv ready for Mark.

So out with it, so we can move along and all revel in the tokai suckage together.

Mark. steel yourself.

editted: to update my post someone ran back after the fact to remove the incriminating bit. How delightful. bloody agent.

So enlighten us rude one

If you need enlightenment try a church.

Or ask Deon his opinion of my approach to the process and meetings, because unlike you he does actually have some knowledge.

Or alternately you can continue making baseless accusations and snide insults, something you seem to pride yourself on.

There is a third option - let's meet and thrash this out face to face.

Guys please.

Raptor. I've been involved for enough time to know the workings of the system quite well. Truth is one cannot be on guard ALL the time and time meeting with them is better spent focussing on the issues at hand rather than gagging over a short term closure after a devastating fire. As you say, focus should be on working towards the timeframe of reopening. 18 months is fast track when you compare it to the 4 year projection of creating a world class facility. There are many more issues that affect the outcome of new trails than speeding up the closure. Many factors affect the trails, one of them being the change in landscape in a world heritage site, natural wonder, national reserve with red data list species needing conservation.

Some more understanding would be welcome.

Wow. A tete a tete about tokai and I'm not in the thick of it... something must be wrong with this picture...

Raptor, quit it with the snide remarks and thinly veiled insults. It's just not conducive to progression, and is frankly childish.

I'm.actually surprised that Mark hasn't been more rude to you given your forum wide approach and attitude.

Thanks deon,

With knowledge comes understanding. Naturally the announced prospect of early access to Silvermine created excitement that is now disappointment. I fully appreciate the respect with which you have relayed your challenges. A diamond in the rough they say.

I'll direct my queries to you in future as the other fellow seems a bit nasty.

It's easy to knock the efforts of some and never realize the repurcussion. You will be surprised how we are judged, your comment earlier being prime. I'm not surprised he reacted like he did.

Durbanville, stellenbosch, Paarl.

Contermans is fun, hoogekraal too.

But the fuel costs are a bit ouch to say the least so we normally try and get a few of us together to minimize the costs.

..bizarre how the events have conspired against mountain biking this year. Not only Tokai, but Jonkershoek and Welvanpas also going up in flames. Then to rub it in, Zuma conspires further and opens his mouth plunging the fuel price into uncharted territory.

Really?

I think we need to take SANParks to the constitutional court.

Within the context of this mornings news. This is quite funny.

Edit. pay back the money
