Tokai and Silvermine to remain closed to the public

By Press Office · 762 comments

In the interest of public safety, as well as for the protection of the environmental integrity of the Silvermine and Tokai sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), park management decided that these two areas will remain closed to the public until further notice.

TMNP management understands that users are eager to access these areas, however they remain very sensitive and unsafe, and public use of these areas are off limits due to:

  • Smouldering and burning vegetation still needs to be extinguished and flare ups will occur as stumps and roots burn.
  • Standing trees that have been burnt or damaged by the fire are extremely dangerous as they continue to come down in the area.
  • Recently burnt veld (as well as adjacent areas) is hazardous as the fire will have burnt roots underground and foot falls may cause serious injuries.
  • Unstable slopes may result in rock falls
  • Winds and rain may exacerbate the danger with respect to falling trees, branches, rock falls and mudslides
  • Hazardous clear-felling operations of the burnt plantation trees are underway by Cape Pine
  • Disturbance to surviving animals
  • Burnt areas are sensitive as windblown seeds can be damaged and the first emerging plants can be killed by accidental trampling
  • Disturbance to sensitive erodible soils

The closure of the burnt areas will be continually assessed and reopening will only be considered once all safety and environmental issues have been addressed. For some areas this may take between six to twenty four months.

TMNP management and staff would like to assure the public that their focus is to secure the areas for the public’s safety and to as quickly as possible rehabilitate the affected sites for future use.

Please assist us by being patient and please remain out of all burnt areas while mother nature heals herself.

Yes, but have you seen how much growth there is up there now?

I understand that reasoning, but it's just not as valid as it was a few months ago.

Has any actually been allowed in to see?

I'm still waiting to hear if TokaiMTB has been able to have a look see. (maybe I missed it somewhere along the way)

Allegedly tomorrow.

Although I will only believe it once it's happened.

I think just be patient.

It isn't your right to be there, so just accept that you can't and move on. When they say 'Open' then we will all rejoice and dance naked in the streets, but questioning the how's and why's won't change the fact that it is closed, it shall remain closed most likely until the end of 2016 for riders and just move on.

For someone who rode/ran up there every single day of the week, it sucks.

I have spent a gazillion dollars on extra petrol getting to Rhodes mem or the N7. It is inconvenient and to be honest I see the mountain from work and home, so it is always on my mind.

But being a whiney wet blouse about things we can't control gets us nowhere.

Keep up the good fight gentlemen who have been elected to deal with SANparks and its minions... the rest? Just respect the process and respect the fact that it is closed

I have it on good authority from a "friend" who has been up there that there is an amazing amount of new growth, lots of it being grasses and bulb / tuber type plants and smaller fynbos type things sprouting. The big plants like the proteas and trees are for the most part dead, but some are regrowing from their bases. There is almost total ground cover in place, There is also no evidence of any significant rockfalls or erosion.

Tokai is an exception due to logging but there is IMO no ecological reason why someone cant ride on a jeeptrack around silvermine, or run / walk on an established rocky path

To be honest I think is was stretch using that as an excuse anyway. There is tons of rocks around to provide cover and a few patches of vegetation as well

I agree.

And I've said the whole time that I can't understand why the jeep track up Ou Wapad and around the peak is closed.  Makes no sense.

I think it is closed because, much like the powers that be are finding out at Jonkers, the sense of entitlement is strong in this sector.

Opening up access above or below the old trail network will encourage people to 'just take a look see' which quickly turns into rogue riding, unsanctioned trails being built and ridden etc...

You will find this type of escalated entitlement is a common theme.

So then pop a fine maker 100m beyond the gate on the Tokai side issuing R2500 fines that don't need to be paid because they can't be bothered to go to court... :whistling:

This sounds like a case of the few ruining it for the masses, although in this case 'the few' are theoretical...

Or not

What is the point of a post like this? It adds nothing of value.

If you have some information that actually shows the post you quoted was incorrect then please tell us.

I bought my house with tokai in mind, was one of the main reasons, and that was about 1 yr exactly prior to the burns.

My motivation to go for a ride now is the lowest its been since starting to cycle.

I think they will have to rebuild all the trails and jeep track around Tokai shortly after it opens.. its going to be soooooo busy.

I feel that, lost without the place. I'm so pathetic that on Sunday I sat and repeatedly watched a twenty second video of my youngster riding the first corner on Boulders...

Just remember though that it will return and hopefully bigger and better.

Marko the post is an over generalization making out that most riders would be rogue riders just given the smallest opportunity whereas it would be only a very small number that would ride where they are not supposed to ride. Most riders are responsible riders. Jonkers and Tokai would have been spaghetti by now if there were so many riders doing what they should not.

his post didn't once mention 'most', and thus is not a generalisation. As you well know, it only takes the few to muck it up for the most. same old story. round and round we go. quibbly about days gone by.

ai. can this damn place open already.

Please explain your reasoning

It's not my reasoning, it's the reason given by San Parks - more vegetation next to the roads (because that's where the fire department were able to keep the flames at bay) and therefore that's where the animals are seeking refuge. If people are allowed in then the animals will be frightened away into a potentially dangerous area.

That did (slightly) make sense, but there's a lot of vegetation about now, so the reasoning is not as valid.

All it takes is 1.. then he shows his friend, then they show 2 more friends...

As the law abiding folk go on about their business there will always be those who know better. B52 in Tokai, the horse trails which turned into fashionable #ENDURO trails which popped out at the end of Fairy Garden and many more were unsanctioned, uncontrolled trails which were built in unsolicited areas of the forest...

If the same folk go back they will not be content to do a loop of jeep track around the dam, no. They will as history shows find new unsanctioned places to throw a hoe..

I am certainly not generalizing nor am I pointing fingers at what I would call the general law abiding riding public.

But unfortunately all it takes is one to get the ball rolling and then we will have a big fight on our hands as to whether we will ever be allowed back, never mind when

There are some who refuse to believe this or accept it as a point for the unwillingness to get behind the ideas we had for any expansion. Basically, we could not be trusted to keep off the horse trails after making promises that an expanded DH trail, one that completes the trail from the top, is all the guys were looking for. Within weeks the trail Renaissance Man and I had closed without the help of those making the promises was reopened and despite several efforts from both Parks and the mountain bike community, it remained open and festered in the mind of the new section manager who felt betrayed for committing to us - in good faith.

Hands up those who on a daily basis had to contend with the constant nag for more trails, and on the flip side the nag to live up to the promises that "won" 3 new sections of a trail running through restored fynbos.

Simple fact, the 10 percent killed it for the 90.
