Tokai and Silvermine to remain closed to the public

By Press Office · 762 comments

In the interest of public safety, as well as for the protection of the environmental integrity of the Silvermine and Tokai sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), park management decided that these two areas will remain closed to the public until further notice.

TMNP management understands that users are eager to access these areas, however they remain very sensitive and unsafe, and public use of these areas are off limits due to:

  • Smouldering and burning vegetation still needs to be extinguished and flare ups will occur as stumps and roots burn.
  • Standing trees that have been burnt or damaged by the fire are extremely dangerous as they continue to come down in the area.
  • Recently burnt veld (as well as adjacent areas) is hazardous as the fire will have burnt roots underground and foot falls may cause serious injuries.
  • Unstable slopes may result in rock falls
  • Winds and rain may exacerbate the danger with respect to falling trees, branches, rock falls and mudslides
  • Hazardous clear-felling operations of the burnt plantation trees are underway by Cape Pine
  • Disturbance to surviving animals
  • Burnt areas are sensitive as windblown seeds can be damaged and the first emerging plants can be killed by accidental trampling
  • Disturbance to sensitive erodible soils

The closure of the burnt areas will be continually assessed and reopening will only be considered once all safety and environmental issues have been addressed. For some areas this may take between six to twenty four months.

TMNP management and staff would like to assure the public that their focus is to secure the areas for the public’s safety and to as quickly as possible rehabilitate the affected sites for future use.

Please assist us by being patient and please remain out of all burnt areas while mother nature heals herself.

Well there are literally truck loads of trees coming out on a daily basis so its happening, but its still a massive area to clear

Several loads of Pine leaves each day. Routes are via Baden Powell or N2 headed out to Stellenbosch depot. Last truck exits at sundown and work continues over weekends and public holidays.

A significant portion of levels 4 and 5 have been cleared, and as you say, the Orpen rd blocks are also being felled.

I could be mistaken but I was sure a load turning onto the N2 yesterday was gum..

Hi people

Jonkershoek reserve is open. No singletrack is officially open. Too dangerous.

Neverending story will be opened in the beginning of may. The very top will be closed indefinitely until plan can be made at portage sections.

Felling will commence on the fire hut trail early may. Absolutely no entry that side then. I have been told that if any complaints are heard from felling contractor, the reserve will be closed for cycling. If there is a no entry sign is up turn around. Even on weekend and no cutting, turn around at the sign.

If someone tells you to turn around, turn around. People need to respect this. Be patient. If we mess this up by rogue riding, things could stop completely until they are done felling at year end.

There is a map at the gate. Ask the man at the gate to point it out. There is a green and red zone. Green we may use but may not backtrack on a contour road into red. Red area means none of the main climbs or double black diamond or any canaries. This is for 6 months minimum. I aim to get some signage up early May when we officially open Neverending.

Specialized are paying for this first work. If all goes well, we start this week still

YUSSIS, if people get caught messing this up for us then they must be lynched(or a vigilante gang must be setup and force them to ride supermarket dualsussers).

Like I said, I could be wrong. Have you seen them yourself? Also are they from the burnt areas or still healthy timber?

It would be interesting to get an idea of percentage (i.e which areas have been cleared)

All the timber would still be healthy. It will take several months before the trees are unusable but even then, CP are still held to the contract to clear the pine - although the urgency would be reduced which won't work in our favour.

I'm asking whether it is burnt trees that they are taking out? There are some sections that haven't been burnt and are still green

I was also surprised to see how many green patches were left after the fire, amazing if you consider the way it burnt, that there is even a scrap left.

Um, can't say it any other way, they are taking out all the trees, everything is usable. Of course they are still working to a plan so will work from top down/or down up.. what ever it is. Possibly with all the extra teams they may even work from left to right??

I'm confused. This started off being about Tokai and now it seems we are talking about Jonkers. Just what is going on at Tokai? Any trees coming out of there?

Still talking about tokai...

Same thing happening at Jonkers though. Intensive logging, for the same reason.

I get that Deon, but if as you say the after a few months the timber may become unusable, would it not make sense to tackle the affected trees first?

If there are a few unaffected in a compartment they are harvesting, then cool. But if majority of a compartment are not burnt, leave that for later.

Maybe it requires too much thinking, or maybe I'm asking "STUPID" questions (in which case I'm sorry).

I'll have to have a closer look to see which "significant portion of levels 4 and 5 have been cleared".

On a positive note, it seems that some previously restricted areas within TMNP will be open to MTB on trial basis in the near future, thanks to Rob Vogel of Table Mountain Bikers

I haven't really notices any difference in the upper forest but will take a closer look today

i've been told that steenberg golf course are expecting to only half 9 viable golf holes during the winter. such is the increased runoff/watertable now that the super suckers up the hilll have been harvested/burned.

You're right, the literally hundreds of hours applied by mountain bike reps is starting to bear fruit. It is of course still a trial and this is where you can play your part.

Rob is also getting a fair bit of traction with his proposal for the Green Belts

Tokai is closed to us, so it would follow that not much is happening on the ground in there.

Just because the committee are not shouting from the rooftops doesn't mean that nothing is happening or no progress is being made. There has been a lot of work put in and things are moving forward.

In answer to earlier questions regarding the trees - what difference does it make to us as riders whether the healthy or burned trees are being removed first? By the time we get back in there to ride all of them will be gone, the order in which they are taken means nothing to us as a user group.

I saw a truck and double trailer of pine trunks come past my house today in muizenberg. Most weren't burned but a few were black. If you take a close look at the mountain there are several areas that are coming out at the same time. The Pumptrack at Uitsig is a great vantage point...

I'm not referring to the last few months I'm just talking in general. I don't expect anything to happen in tokai right now. Just comparing tokai and table mountain it appears things are moving there as apposed to Tokai where even before the fire not much much was happening. Well not visibility anyway. We even have less trails than what we had before

Okay then what can you personally do to help speed things up?

I'm not being sarcastic here, if you have something to offer or can improve and speed up the progress let us know and help get stuff done efficiently.

Follow Rob Vogel's lead?

Don't just accept what they say. Challenge them on thing. Criticise. This has been said before, even within the committee
