The Munga Mountain Bike Race adds team entry limit

By Press Office · 58 comments

Organisers of The Munga, the new single-stage 1000-kilometre mountain bike race in South Africa, have decided to limit the number of teams to 450 for the inaugural edition, which takes place from 3-8 December 2014.

Since its launch on 22 May, global interest in the event has been significant, largely due to the guaranteed US $1 million dollar prize purse, the richest podium payout in endurance sport. But the organisers want the race experience for all teams, regardless of their finishing position, to be of the highest quality, which has led to the entry number limit.

“We want every participant to savour every moment of The Munga. And in order to ensure a memorable experience, we have decided that 900 riders (450) teams is the optimal number for the first edition,” said Alex Harris, The Munga Founder and Race Director.

“We are promoting The Munga as being ‘unsupported’, but this simply means no outside seconding for any teams. Our five race villages, situated roughly every 150-180 kilometres, will offer comprehensive catering for the participants and we want to ensure this is of a high quality. By limiting the numbers we can guarantee a premium experience,” added Harris.

The top three teams to finish The Munga will share US$900 000 with the other US$100 000 being offered as the ‘Underdog’ prize, a lucky draw reward open to all teams that finish outside the top three and within the five-day cut-off limit.

“Since the launch, we’ve been inundated with enquiries, many of which have resulted in entries from athletes from around the world. We’ve noticed it’s not only mountain bikers, but also triathletes and road cyclists,” said Harris. “The big challenge for many so far seems to be to find a well-matched partner.

“This match-up is obviously crucial as the race, even to beat the five-day cut-off, will demand a combination of sleep deprivation and deep levels of physical, mental and emotional strain, all of which can break you down and challenge you beyond what you’ve experienced before. Food, drinks and other comforts will be in generous supply at our race villages and we want to ensure that no competitor has to wait long for anything that he or she needs or wants on arrival,” explained Harris.

Two entries to The Munga will be given at the 2014 UCI Marathon World Championships event in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa next week. The winner of the Elite women’s race will earn one entry, while the other will be given as a lucky draw prize to one of the finishers of the Rainbow Challenge, the Marathon World Championships equivalent for amateur master category riders (aged 30 and older) that will be held the day prior to the Elite World Championships at the same venue.

Got to get your $10k's worth of value

Too true...

If they think it through they could even get the big pharma houses to sponsor these stops...2 lines of charlie, and top up my mainline in my camelbak with winnie and epo

But on a serious note....how can it not be sanctioned, surely it will take all the race's credibility away if you have a bunch of dopers in the starting pen.

Maybe someone can confirm if its indeed sanctioned...I am not sure.

Look I think it would be pretty dangerous to let okes go crazy but im sure sanctioning the event would come at a great cost? Money to UCI or having to operate within their rules ect.

Sure it will come at a cost, but surely it would be one of the first things on your budget when organizing if you want to remain credible. The thing with dopers is that cheated in sanctioned / regulated races, think what of what lengths they will go to considering the prize money at stake and that they got a "hallpass" ito their bans. I mean sure you will take 10 years of your life, might even blow up completely, but win this one race....and you retire.

PS they will also be fools not to since they are either serving a ban / banned for life. This is the final roll of the dice so to speak...might as well load it.

Im not encouraging doping - far from it. Im just not sure what other rules sanctioning might bring - it could not allow for this type of format. I dunno. Obviously I want a fair race, like everyone else but it would be great to see Lance give something like this a crack. He has the money so don't think it would be about that. He hasn't raced for a period way longer that his cohorts ....maybe have an ex doper cat?

Sure, and agree...it will a proper spectacle if it is open to everyone. Just saying that we must be under no illusion that any ex doper is clean at the starting blocks...They will be doped to the gills for sure, as I mentioned above...the incentive is too big not to. Maybe The Munga will apply the same stance as The Epic....no ex dopers are allowed in any capacity.

I will really applaud such a move.

still waiting to see some actual details on who's entered....even if not on the website, then surely the okes throwing $2k down on non refundable deposit are tweeting to their hordes about it...."platt and huber going we're racing munga". that sort of thing.

Until then it's all marketing mirrors and balls generating promo hype, something that I always raise eyebrows at.

Apparently, and i will quote from the horses mouth:

That hasn’t deterred racers, though. “Four weeks after the launch, we have just over 100 teams registered and many more working on their sponsors in order to get the funding to enter,” Griffin says.

I am also still wondering what their stance will be wrt dopers...

1.Previously convicted dopers that already served their bans

2.Dopers currently serving their bans.

Anyone from the Munga reading this...???

I saw that...and great, I so want this thing to happen. but would it hurt to disclose some of the higher profile entries...are there any or is it corporate weekend warriors who want the first medal?.

wow, with 100 entrants they have already covered the prize money (provided everyone comes up with the full fee). Must be more rich suckers out there than I thought

Seems they might just pull this thing off and prove this sceptic wrong ^_^

Could work both ways .... if someone saw x or y has entered that might discourage them.

not at all, just caught up in the mystery and drama of what could be a game changer. The fact that they put out a statement from lawyers confirming the prizemoney was secured means that quite a few people are raising eyebrows. 100 'entries' but very little details on any big names and I'm a little skeptical (do agree on JGR's theory of the groot krokodille scaring off the apsirant weekend warriors).

Remember all we have at the moment are some pictures from a launch and a website, the race only really exists once you have confirmed racers and a route. Put them on the startline and it's go go go.
