The all new Santa Cruz Hightower 29 or 27.5+, 135mm VPP travel bike

By Press Office · 56 comments

Hightower has the versatility to deal with whatever appears on the horizon. Running either proven 29″ wheels or the new monster truck 27.5+ standard, Hightower seamlessly adapts to the trails and style you ride, no matter where you are in the world.

29

If straight-line speed, rallying through rock gardens and sprinting out of turns is your bag, then 29” wheels are the big ticket.

27.5+

When conditions get loose and the traction just ain’t there, you’ll want to reach for bigger tires (above). 27.5+ elevates Hightower to a whole different level, enabling you to rail the soft spots and carry momentum where standard tires bog down.

No matter what wheel size you run, geometry remains optimized thanks to a neat little “High/Low” setting on the upper link that flips to adjust bottom bracket height. Hightower’s 67-degree head angle, longer reach, and trim chainstays combine to create an altogether different class of dreadnought in any configuration. Meanwhile, 150mm of seat dropper, a water bottle mount, and internal routing reflect an armada of killer details.

135mm of VPP travel is reinforced by a 148 axle spacing and the kind of Nomad-style linkage arrangement and swingarm design we reserve for the heaviest hitters in our model line-up. The resulting package leaves Hightower standing head and shoulders above anything else out there.

Waterbottles?

I think I read something on the SC website about it having bottle mounts inside the front triangle.

You're right. You can see them waaaaaaaaaaay down below in the frame.

Waterbottles?

One, inside the frame below the shock.

You can have a bottle mounted even with a piggyback shock.

The TBLT had the mounts on the downtube below the front triangle.....so the bottle's mouthpiece always gets covered in crud from your tyres and you nearly fall off the bike when leaning down so far to get it out.

Guess where I'm going tomo?

That looks like Fox suspension and XTR crank - so not the SC factory build.

Not a huge fan of the Ardent at rear tho 'cos I know my TBLT corners, rolls and brakes a whole lot better with a rival brand....

What you running on the back ?

Spez GC, not as durable but miles better. But it would send a mixed message if they display the latest SC with Spez tyres on......

Not really.

Runs on 140mm fork for 29er and 150mm 27.5+ to keep the 67deg head angle and the warranty i guess.

It is because you change the fork and wheels and that changes the type of bike you are riding all with one frame.

Most will spec the 150 fork if they want to run both wheel sizes. No problem. The bike in the shop has a Fox 36 Factory fork on it and looks like 160mm ,cos much more stanchion sticking out than the 140 fork on my LT

The Pike's travel can be adjusted internally - so you do not need 2 forks.  Having said that, I think most will ride it in the 29er guise.

To change the travel on the Pike, you need to change the air shaft. You need a 140mm and a 150mm airshaft and change them out depending on which wheel size you are in.

I really think the bike will be just fine running both wheelsizes with a 150mm fork. In terms of geometry we are talking only 2 or 3mm difference in BB height and a tiny diff in head angle too. Provided you flip the chip.....

The owner of the particular bike in the pics looks to be running even more than 150mm fork and he kinda knows his stuff [emoji57]
