Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

If the fire is out by the weekend, then surely the ride can still go ahead

I think the concern is that Chappies may be destabilized due to the burning of vegetation and damage to catch nets and stuff. Ou Kaapse should have no such concerns but it wont be very pretty over there

Other big problem with regards to the wind, will be billowing clouds of ash / soot on certain sections of the route. Can be dangerous and a health risk for people with asthma / chest ailments.

I really hope we don't have to do another detour. I never enjoyed it as much the last time we had to. Come on mother nature, Help us out here.

KUDOS to all involved in fire fighting and the rescue efforts.

I have always wanted a sub three on the detour, horrible and harder route, but at least there is something to shoot for

No one has said anything about the Muizenberg road works.

It gets very narrow as the road zips left and right between the excavations on either side.

Alternative route could take us back to fish hoek and back via boyes drive and M3 home

Can go through the fire why not? Roadies are used to car fume smoke, in fact I would like to go through the fire will make it more fun.

Correct, i'm more concerned about this than the route that might or might not change.

at this point in time that concern is not that section of Chapmans Peak as the fire is not burning where the catch fencing is. IF they can get the Noordhaven fire under control then the south slope of Chappies is safe.

The big concerns is the clean up operations and has the tarmac been damaged as these are harder to repair in a few days.

At this stage I fee there is a good chance we will ride on the original planned route

I think this would be the most likely, though I hope it will be the normal route.

I can see the south slope from work, and it's about 60% burnt and still burning.  They're not putting it out now as there's obviously more important places to be looking after at the moment.  My wife is in Noordhoek and says that it's coming lower all the time.

That would mean two way traffic between Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay.  That would never work.

Kudos for CTCT having contingencies in place. I would be concerned if they were saying that everything is fine and we are riding the original route. Lets see on Wednesday what they say.

What if they hold the alternative in Stellies.    No fires here.

If you ride fast enough the flames won`t hurt you, lets make this a feature rather than a problem this can be lots of fun!

Agree man! I rode through there on Saturday and the road has level changes (like manhole covers 10cm above the road surface) and only one lane (3m max) going between Muizenberg and St James - the other half is still sand and not even ready for tarmac
