The Pedal Power Association, South Africa’s leading cycling organisation supports Government’s call to South Africans to adhere to strict regulations as we head for a level 4 lockdown phase, effective 01 May 2020.

“President Ramaphosa pointed out that exercise under strict public health conditions will be allowed and it is for that reason, we have submitted a proposal to the President to allow cycling under strict lockdown conditions,” explains Rens Rezelman, chairman of the PPA.

“For cyclists, these current times are exceptionally frustrating and like the rest of the population, there are many who are extremely worried and justifiably so, about how their jobs and personal income are going to be affected by COVID-19. Despite our personal and varying opinions on the matter, South Africa has to abide by strict lock-down measures and will have to do so for quite some time in the future. The majority of the cycling community has heeded this call to be compliant and for that, they need to be commended,” Rezelman said.

“Based on international practice of regulating cycling in a COVID-19 environment (Australia; New Zealand; and the United Kingdom as points of reference), the PPA believes that limited and regulated cycling activity in these trying times has numerous benefits that outweigh the possible risks associated with the activity. Like most activities in this time, the PPA recognises that the discipline to adhere to these rules are often self-regulated and expect that the cycling community would behave as a microcosm of the larger South African community in this regard,” said Rezelman.

Rezelman believes that the majority of cyclists will comply with the following suggestions made by the PPA :

  1. Daily exercise is proven to reduce stress and boost your immune system. After weeks of lockdown (and under stressful economic conditions) many South Africans would benefit from being able to cycle. Your medical experts would be able to verify this statement.
  2. We propose that cyclists may not cycle in groups of more than 2 people (and both cyclists need to reside at the same dwelling);
  3. Cyclists may not cycle for more than 2 hours;
  4. Cyclists may not cycle further than 20km from their place of residence; and
  5. Cyclists may only cycle once a day if doing so recreationally.

According to Rezelman all other safety aspects which is advocated through its safe cycling campaign, such as the wearing of helmets; rear lights; visibility, not riding solo for crime related reasons, adhering to the rules of road as well as social distancing which has now become the norm, would obviously apply as the PPA wants to be part of the solution not the problem.

From a commuter perspective, the PPA believes that by using a bicycle as a mode of transport as opposed to crowded public transport options, the spread of COVID-19 can further be reduced. “The PPA would like to encourage those who have bicycles to use them instead of public transport in this time. We would also like to ask those who have old bicycles to donate them to people who could really use them to be economically mobile in these times,” Rezelman said.

“Cycling is a healthy past-time and it’s proven beyond doubt that regular exercise helps improve the immune system and that’s all we really have right now to combat this virus. We all need to stand together to get through the damage that this virus is causing in the World and in South Africa,” Rezelman explained.

According to Rezelman, South Africans need to accept the realities of the current situation, abide by the rules which are in place to save their lives and live in the hope that this COVID-19 virus too, will pass.

The irony is that the people that is genuinely struggling to provide food for their families is not the one's that is complaining.

Today we celebrate 5 weeks of isolation.

I have been at home for 35 days, isolated, I do 50 km a day in spinning. I am not eating meat, dairy or fat. Like lots of fresh vegetables and simple homemade dishes every day.

The change has been fantastic! I feel great! Zero alcohol! A healthy, gluten-free, sugar-free diet I exercise at home for 1 or 2 hours every day! I have already lost 5 kilos and I have gained muscle mass.

I feel agile, fresh, I sleep 8 hours a day, my elasticity has improved. I read an average of 1 book weekly, I am taking 2 online courses and

I plan to get certified in 1 week. I do yoga and I have greatly improved my concentration.

I have no idea who wrote this, but I'm so proud of him that I decided to copy and paste!

never ever confuse a good "Story" with facts .... but let's not forget ... SA has not even tested 220800 people .... The only thing we KNOW, is the we have no idea of the true numbers in SA ....

bit difficult to "do the math" when you DONT have the real facts .... but never let facts get in the way of a good story ...

Saved me a bunch of typing - thanks.

click on USA. Italy, UK. Spain, Australia and South Africa.

select from 100th case and then long the x axis the number of days and Y the number of cases.

for the time period from 100th case we are way way way ahead of anyone bar perhaps the Aussies.

Then once you've identifies countries with similar infection rates look at what conditions are in place in those countries vs the health care system.

let us know what you read from the data

My stance is that irrespective of the number of tests done and the true number of positive cases for SA, at the end of the day, the only things that matter are, the number of cases requiring intensive care, and the number of deaths, both of which has not presented itself in the volumes expected and which is not impacted by the amount of tests done since these stats will surface irrespective.

The current reality is probably too good to be true but all previous predictions have been dismissed. I'm staying positive and believe that something unique is happening in SA but we haven't figured it out yet or it simply cannot be explained.

Do a search for an interview with a doctor in California, Dr. ERICkSON. It's long but very informative.

UK is one hour and Aus is " in your neighborhood "

no its not restricted. Check your facts please. Only Wales has a restriction. England and Scotland do not. You are allowed one exercise session per day. No time or distance limit. The guideline is to exercise as yo were to maintain your fitness and health. So if you''re used to a 4hr ride per day and you can show that is what you are indeed used to then its allowed. If you're a fat arsed couch potato trying to use cycling as a way to get out of the house for house then you clearly wont last more than an hour to 90min.

In Aus, in your neighborhood is also a guideline and if you're an elite level athlete and used to training 2-3 hrs per day then that's allowed. You're not allowed to cycle from Melbourne to Furn Tree Gully because that's taking the piss

How are they going to control how long or far a person has cycled. If it's a lone cyclist adhering to social distancing, I don't see an issue... We need exercise to have healthy immune systems, let alone mental state. Many "under privileged" demographics use their bicycles to and from work, or get groceries, or even walk. It's their only transport.but because cycling is a hobby /sport to other demographics, we are not permitted to cycle to the store, or to work (I work in pharmaceutical manufacturing)... As long as social distancing is the priority, I'm with the PPA! Safer to be cycling alone, than traveling by taxi, or even walking the isles of a supermarket#PEDALPOWERASSOCIATION

agreed 200%! do any of these government plebs even have any idea about exercise and health, even the minister of health(obese) , had someone right next to her, touching her face, helping her remove her mask. LET ALONE SPEAK ENGLISH PROPERLY... Im with #PPA

The government.

Is this the same government that's been robbing us blind and destroying every single thing they come into contact with? That government?

Thanks but I'd rather have the PPA put forward suggestions.

I've been riding to work , and its better now with less traffic around, there is a very slim change off getting infected if you ride or train alone. So I'm all for training outside.

I love how everyone assumes the entire country will be lowering to level 4. It was stated that the lowering of restrictions was all dependent on the numbers and right now, the numbers are the highest ever.

KZN, JHB and WC, good luck! EC and FS will probably get level 4. The other provinces in my opinion should lower to level 3 or less considering there are some provinces with single digit cases.

I'm hoping for the best but I don't think anyone with be out riding this weekend.

Number of infections, you need to subtract the number of people recovered and thus the current infected number is 3,230

He is not deciding, thats the nature of the virus. The old and compromised are most vulnerable.

To me that is a dumb idea. If you and one other person is riding on a farm road why must you wear a mask if no one is around?

Got to cater for the masses.

Impossible to have a rule for every single scenario.

Nobody going to care what you doing on a farm road, you can even ride naked.
