By Press Office · 46 comments

PowerTap reasserts its position as market leader with the addition of two new power meters to their portfolio with the P1 pedal and C1 chainring. Through years of observations, testing, development and hard work, PowerTap is committed to providing power measurement products with the accuracy that cyclists deserve.

With the introduction of these new products, PowerTap will lead the industry by becoming the first and only cycling power meter company with a complete portfolio of power meter products for multiple locations on the bike.

The P1 pedal is a simple, intelligent and uncompromising design that provides the same proven PowerTap accuracy and reliability. The simple one-piece design easily mounts to any crank and does not require calibration nor installation angle setting for a true “plug-and-play” experience.

The P1 also features dual band ANT+ and Bluetooth SMART for compatibility with a multitude of head units and smart devices. Plus, the independent measurement opens the possibility for a new set of pedalling metrics previously unavailable.

The C1 chainring is a full featured, crank-based power meter that features dual-sided measurement. Available in multiple chainring tooth options for 5 bolt, 110 BCD cranks, the C1 mounts to existing hardware on the bike. Additionally, dual band ANT+ and Bluetooth SMART connectivity make the C1 an obvious choice for riders looking for more features and better value.

The new PowerTap G3 disc hub puts a new spin on disc brake hubs. With a sleeker, smaller and lighter-weight design the PowerTap G3 disc hub shaves an additional 180 grams – a weight saving of more than 30% over the previous model. Built on the popular G3 hub platform the new and improved G3 Disc Hub is available in 24- and 28-hole options and is available as 142x12mm thru axle or 135mm QR for a variety of use cases. The straight pull spoke and wider flange design sports improved wheel stiffness for better power transfer.

“We have spent the past 15 years learning from and educating cyclists on all facets of training with power,” says PowerTap President, Jeff Frehner. “Our passion for making cyclists better by utilising power measurement remains at the core of why we are in this business. We strive to always be the experts in the power measurement category.”

PowerTap is excited to expand their power meter portfolio and unleash the P1 and C1 to the power training world. Follow @powertap on Twitter to stay up to date on product availability.

The Pedal Idea will definitely not work for Mtb'ing, those Keo type cleats will break so fast.

Well it looks like Stages for me...I'm fussy about what pedals I use and I ride a compact 50/34 which I don't think the new PT crank unit caters for.

Do Stages have a Patent on their crank arm unit, just wondering why PT don't do something like that?

Bulk of the market means Shimano, means 4-bolt 110 BCD.

Powertap also needs to look at the TT market, because powertap hubs don't work in discs[1].  That means they should also look at 54 and 56 tooth rings.

Would this do you?

The chainrings are user replaceable - unless you change them with a hammer and chisel :whistling: they won't need recalibration. Lik you say they have developed this system with most bikes in mind I'm sure they would have done a market survey to see what is the most common crank used...and as I have been informed - they will be releasing the newer Shimano 4 bolt standard in the next while...

it is not chinrings but merely a spider of some sort if I liik correctly. much like an SRM power ring on a sram crank. all this does is rotate your rings so that the bolt now sits inbetween the spider arms.

Am I looking at this right?

I use 50/36 and prefer it as the jump is not as high as 50/34 Suppose you climb more where you stay than us here in SA

I bought my first compact cranks way back in +/- 2004 / 2005 and they were only available in the 50/34 then. I'm quite happy with them so I ordered the same for my Tri bike last year albeit now in 11 speed.

I like to spin up steep climbs and the 34 with a 11/25 or 11/23 is works well for me.

That is 100% correct, the spider will make up the bulk of the cost of the system, as far as we can tell the rings will be propriety but we will see once we get our grubby paws on some.

The cost of the C1 system will be similar to a Dura Ace Stages arm BUT it will offer L/R balance etc to with in 1.5% accuracy.

In terms of availability we are looking at around May to have some of these new systems landed in S.A and final pricing can only be confirmed then as this Rand of ours doesn't know if its coming or going.

That spider moves inboard quite a bit.  Is this BB86 / BB386 compatible?

In theory it should be compatible yes. The main goal/ idea behind it was to keep the rings in the same plane as they were - keeping the chain line correct, as well as not having protrusions behind the rings to foul the frame in some applications.

Stages do have patents on their system, just as their is a patent on this system, perhaps the biggest downfall of Stages (and a few other crank based systems) is that you HAVE to run Alu crank/s and we have found that some of our clients do not want to do so.

The design intention was to add a power meter that can be fitted to a large majority of bikes sold worldwide without too much disturbance to the rest of the components and still be accurate - i.e. if you have carbon cranks then you don't need to sacrifice them to have a power meter.

Hi Power Tap. Would you know whether the C1 is compatible with the Look Zed2 crank?

Hi Power Tap. Would you know whether the C1 is compatible with the Look Zed2 crank?

from what i can see is yes it should be compatible as the look web page makes mention that the crank is both 110 and 130 BCD the PowerTap rings will be 110 BCD.

Will the pedals give power left and right?

But the crank only one side?

BicyclePower

Mar 17, 2015, 12:36 PM

The cranks and pedals will give left right balance. although the cranks will be a calculated amount - similar to Quark.

What changes were made to the g3 hub over previous versions?

The road G3 hubs have had no changes done, they are not changing the 32 hole G3 MTB hub as of yet, but they have released a new "road disc" hub which uses straight pull spokes and comes in 28 and 24 spoke configurations that will suit the newer MTB carbon rims like Roval, Syncros etc.

They have managed to shave off about 120-150 grams with this new disc hub.
