New ballot-style entry process for 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 429 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust (CTCTT) has announced a new entry process for the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour. In line with international best practice, it will take the form of an online ballot system to eliminate the quick sell-out of entries and ensure a more equitable process for all prospective riders.

The free registration of interest in a ballot application will be possible from Wednesday, 09 September 2015 at 1pm to Friday, 25 September 2015 at 1pm. This will be preceded by a Pedal Power Association (PPA) ‘early-bird’ ballot via which PPA will allocate 5,000 entries, at random, to paid-up members.

David Bellairs, a director of race organisers, the CTCTT explains, “To honour PPA as founders of the event, its paid-up members will be offered an ‘early-bird’ opportunity to register their interest in an entry to the 2016 Cycle Tour. Those who are unsuccessful in the initial PPA ballot will automatically be added to the general public ballot starting on 09 September, giving them an additional chance to be awarded an entry.”

Following the challenges faced during last year’s entry process – especially with entries selling out in a record time of eight hours – the online portal will be implemented to improve cyclists’ overall experience. According to Bellairs, online ballot entry portals have proven successful at top European and American sporting events. “Such systems have become standard practice at key sporting events around the world, including the New York Marathon and Boston Marathon. The Trust, along with its three co-naming rights sponsors – Cape Argus, Pick n Pay and Momentum – carefully researched and considered all options, and we are confident that our new process will serve riders well and further entrench the global appeal of the Cape Town Cycle Tour,” he says.

General entries will no longer be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, but will instead involve a three-step process for all public entrants. Corporate Group entries will also no longer be available, so those who have made use of these in the past will need to follow either the public entry process or take up the opportunity to support a charity, this year.

How to apply for a public entry to the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour:

Registering interest / ballot entry applications:

For a period of two and a half weeks, from Wednesday, 09 September at 1pm to Friday, 25 September at 1pm, prospective riders (both local and international) can register their interest free of charge at www.cycletour.co.za. Doing so amounts to an indication of interest only, and will not ensure entry, and will require prospective entrants to update their details at the same time.

Entry confirmation:

During the week of 28 September, successful applicants will receive confirmation emails from the Cycle Tour Events Office to confirm that they have been awarded an entry. Unsuccessful applicants will also receive an email notification and will be invited to enter via a supporting charity or by means of the official substitution process in January 2016.

Securing an entry:

Successful applicants will have until Monday, 26 October at 1pm to make payment and secure their entry. Payment not received before this date, or the applicant’s option to decline the entry, will result in that entry being made available to a previously unsuccessful rider. Local general entries will cost R470 per rider.

Bellairs continues, “We want to avoid thousands of applicants rushing to be first in line as the entry portal opens, and being disappointed when they sell out in a matter of hours. Our intention is to create a fairer system as it allows for a greater and more inclusive opportunity for securing an entry. Entries will be awarded at random, regardless of whether interest is registered on the first or the last day of the registration period. We believe the implementation of this new system is the best way forward for the Cape Town Cycle Tour,” concludes Bellairs.

As in previous years, a certain number of the entries will be made available via charity groups at varying costs. International entries will remain open until February 2016, or until the allocation of 5,000 riders is reached, and will cost R800 each.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour takes place on Sunday, 06 March 2016 and is limited to 35,000 riders.

I got the dreaded "Unsuccessful Application" mail. Do you think if you entered for this year's CTCT and then did not take part it would have counted against you?

I believe so, I also was unsuccessful, sad thing is I have done the last 5, but on my way Sunday morning to the start this year I was involved in an accident that prevented me to ride,  now what has become somewhat of a tradition of going down to CT and spending the Saturday with the kids at the junior tour is  down the drain,

I got a entry but haven't done a seeding race this year, and was hoping

not to. Does anybody know how many groups they will push me back if I done ride a seeding race. I have done about 13 including last year.

You should get a seeding based on the number you have completed if you have not competed in a seeding event prior to it. This is what they did for the 10+ completed competitors in the past.

I am in the same boat.

It Wasn't too bad - was about 8:15 am and now they have done away with the charity bunches possible even earlier.

To those of you that did not get an entry, just hang in there.

I suspect that there will be many people that entered the ballot that will not ride for various.

You may just get a follow up email in the weeks to come as these entries become available.

There will also be many substitutions later on as well.

Best of luck to everyone looking to get an entry.

Although it is a lottery based system, there is a weighing model build into it. The more tours and other seeded events you did, the better your chances of getting an entry. Everybody I know were successful. Everyone rode the last 5-7 years and one oke 11. Everyone also entered as a group (husband and wife), so I would think if you entered as a group that would also increase your chances.

Likewise I think that if you entered and didn't pitched, that you would get "penalised". It only seems fair. There is someone that would have love to rode in your place. I understand in your particular case it was beyond your control, but to mane people just don't pitched for simple reasons.

I go one, cant even remember actually entering this lotery because I thought the costs (entry and traveling there) will be to much (maybe a friend entered me).

Edit: only did this race once before in 2012

You can still do 94.7 or Stellenbosch tour ( Burger/ Sanlam) for a seeding.

Yeah, was kind of out of my control too, my wife had given birth to our first child a few days before and the Sunday was our first full day at home with him. Living in the South Peninsula there would have been 25 000 + cyclists in between me and her, so we decided it would be best for me to stay at home in case she needed help or support. Suppose one can't expect the Cycle Tour Trust to investigate each no show, but it kind of sucks that I am now being penalised for this.

Oh well, will have to wait for the second round or a substitution I guess....

Lucky participants have till 26 October at 1pm to pay for their entry, failing to do so the entry will go back into pool. The 26th is on a Monday a few days before pay day so I'm sure a few places will be opening again.

Well congrats on the baby. I hope you get an entry with the 2nd round or substitution.

I can, but its a lot of bucks to spend to come up from PE just to be in a group or two better start. The days I used to ride is A, it would have been more important. As long as I don't get moved 3 or 4 groups back, but I just phoned them and they reckon I should start roundabout the same

group as last year.

If you feel you are being milked - why don't you just give up your entry to one of the many on the waiting list who don't mind owning a timing chip?

To add: It is a once off purchase which you get to use at all future Racetec timed events which include most of the big roadie events - so really no reason to moan

The only other ride i do which uses the chip is the amashova...and i have already entered and paid...chip is not a requirement for the amashova...i have a roag chip for all the mtb races.

By the way you want my entry...bid starts at R 2000 racetech chip included.....just kidding...my entry is NOT for sale.

My mates are also in...so looks like party starts in durban and ends back in durban a week later [emoji12]

I just had a stressful, no entry confirmation, weekend to discover my successful application email in my junk folder. It is a Zimbra email account, so just check those junk folders if you have not received any confirmation yet.
