New and improved Sahmurai Sword launched at Eurobike

By Press Office · 80 comments

Now almost 18-months into production, the SahmuraiSword, that easy-to-use, simple-to-store and safe way of carrying a tubeless plug system on your mountain bike, has undergone something of a facelift. The improvements are far from just aesthetic tweaks, however and come on the back of rider feedback and continued internal R&D over the past years.

The system – which are essentially bar-plugs – allows you store both the plug and reamer tool inside your handlebars. This we know. So what has changed?

  • It features an improved (i.e stronger) base unit into which the needle and reamer have been recessed deeper.
  • The knurling on the outside edge has been ‘softened’ to reduce interference with your hands and improve fit into the handlebars.
  • Then the logo has also been recessed to protect it and we’ve made it more visible. ( You have to show off you’re riding smart, right?)

“We constantly strive to better our product with the feedback from our warriors,” explains the team behind the product. “Small differences to the product can make a huge difference in the result,” they said.

The SahmuraiSword – brainchild of three-time Absa Cape Epic champion Stefan Sahm of Team Bulls – fits snug and locks fast inside the handlebars without any give or movement. It doesn’t affect riding in any way, but is easily accessible when you puncture. No multitools are needed to unscrew it and no special fittings are required to attach it to the bike.

I see CWC sell these for R 320.00. Dynaplug kit is around 55 US$ on the Dynaplug site.

I got one of these a few years back at about 100 rand. Am I missing a trick here?

I took mine out one day to fix a flat.  Went to the shop that afternoon.  I paid R50-00 for a kit like that.  They wanted R499 for the same kit.  I started laughing, took my credit card and walked out...  I am not stupid and I know that is not R25-00 to make, as they use cheap scrap from China...

Sure if you are OK with it looking a little bad, already gave the other one to a buddy. Everything works on it though, work being the operative word. Apparently Manny's Bike Mecca has Dynaplugs. Just let me know about how you want to get hold of it.

Can you post it to paarl or de doorns?

One of the hero to zero stories of mtb.

Looked awesome and was pretty innovative... Until you bought them.

Unless you tightened them to Hulk level they fell out.

Sometimes the little plastic threads broke.

Awesome idea - kaaak product.

Just bought one today, fit it in the handlebar once and I stripped the plastic threads on the one side, could not agree more with your last statement.

Happy with mine. Never fallen out. Maybe you guys aren't fitting it tight enough?

That was my opinion last year......now not so happy anymore. The one bar-end broke in half after a small fall and I lost the other one during a race????

Still like the idea though, perhaps alu is the answer?

I have lost two sets, lesson learnt, will not buy more

I had something very bizarre happen with these things. Went for a ride, half way through the ride I saw that one had fallen out. Then I encountered another dude who had picked it up, was very happy. When I got home I took them both out to try and secure them better and realized that I now had two pluggers and no reamer.

What are the chances? Obviously the dude found someone else's plugger, really strange coincidence. Also where I ride is not at all crowded, the mountain reserve in Rustenburg, on a 50km ride maybe see 4-5 other riders most days.

I've had these a few times in my basket, but never pulled the trigger due to cost and priorities of other bicycle related purchases. After reading this, I'm glad I didn't buy it

That is what I thought, the threads must be alu and the part that touches the inside of the handlebar must be more grippy like rubber perhaps. Will cost more but at least it will work. It is still a great idea.

Can I still take you up on the offer for the reamer?

I should have listened to the warnings before buying them...

First ride and one of them fell out, fortunately I found it though.

Im going to stick a section of roadie tube over them to see if it will make it fit better, but first impressions are not good.

Every good thread deserves a thread revival every decade or so .....

Anybody know where we can buy a Sahmurai sword set ?

Bit of a back story to this .... punch line it sounds like shops needs to order large batches, and thus it has become very scarce .... at least that is one story .....

Maybe it's the bar storage that's needed? The slug plug is small enough though not to be an issue to carry!

Yeah no issues carrying this in pocket or on bike. For R80 it really does tick the box.

I have the Ryder unit, much prefer the SS.

Also the reamer option with the SS have been used on the trails many times - each time heling other riders with plug-systems that dont come with reamers.

The functionality of the SS is just next level.  Especially the fact that you have immediate access to the plug in the event of a leaking tyre .... I have seen people get in trouble when the tyre is too deflated to actually use the plug .....  (though most punctures are not that critical)

EDIT - I do wonder about those riders where you "need" the reamer ... somehow I think this may be related to not topping up sealant.  Personally I have had many instances where the sealant sprayed out while sealing a hole, but the two occasions where I needed to plug my own tyres the holes where certainly large enough to use the plug without the reamer ..... I would rather have it and not need it ...

Sad reality - very exposed on the bar ends ....

What bike shop ?  (around the Western Cape I may just pop over...)

Do you know their price ?  I since got a link to buy at R350 per set.

The Ryder one is suppository shaped, so you have options...

I don't know these days but in the beginning .... I own 2 and have never bought one. Picked them up on the trails some years ago, luckily both the 'plug side'. No one claimed them so they're on/in my bikes, maybe the riders just didn't tighten them enough 🤔

Dont want to jinx it .... never lost 1 in 20 000km.

Have damaged two with the bike falling over 😬

Got my bike back yesterday .... fell over at the shop or bumped during transit ... either way, the reamer is destroyed ...

Ryder unit is too teeny tiny for anything but a teeny short plug strip. Tossed mine.

The only time a needed a reaming was when I thought that maybe I should get a S-Works so I asked Hambini for advise ….

inhave several slug plugs and have never needed the reamer. They don’t come with one because the plugger just works. I have the one stored in the bar. It’s dual sided ; a small plugger for road tyres and a larger plugger for Mtb tyres. I have modified one for a smaller road punctures. They just work. The reamer might be useful with e-bike tyres where the casing is thick and you want to get a good quality hole to insert the plug into.

I needed my slug plug on Tuesday night after running over a nail that went through the top and out of the side above the bead. The thin plugger fixed the bead puncture and the thicker plugger sorted the tread plug.
don’t need anything fancier IME
