Memorable experience guaranteed at Pennypinchers Origin Of Trails

By Press Office · 53 comments

Fondly referred to as a mountain biker’s dream, the second annual Pennypinchers Origin Of Trails 2-Day Mountain Bike (MTB) Stage Race returns to Stellenbosch this coming weekend (Friday, 28 and Saturday, 29 November 2014).

Combining a vast network of world class trails with beauty and exclusivity, riders will be granted the unique opportunity to experience a spectacular combination of single-track that have been previously unknown to the MTB community. The goal behind the Pennypinchers Origin Of Trails is to offer participants an unbelievable cycling experience, while raising funds to further trail building in Stellenbosch.

According to Corrie Muller, Route Designer, riders can expect lots of exciting trails. “There are technical and fun sections that will suddenly appear from nowhere. Trust the trail builder. It is easier than it looks, don’t overthink it, every obstacle is a joyful experience. On both days, both distances will have a long climb early in the stage. Finding a gentle incline to link 45 farms is somewhat challenging, but luckily the legs will still be fresh. The stretches will be short, while the reward will be plenty,” says Muller.

“Route highlights to look out for on Day One will include Dornier Farm where two aqueducts were opened, taking riders deep into the dense forest,” continues Muller. “Then, Jonkershoek and the GSpot feature some of the best trails in the country. On Day Two riders will get to experience the Noble Savage Trail at Bartinney Wine Estate. A new single-track that is easy to ride, the Noble Savage Trail features the most breathtaking views, hanging hair pins and top quality route designs that will blow your mind”

“The Banhoek Conservancy Team has been working on the routes for the last two years,” says Rose Jordaan, Owner Bartinney Wine Estate and Trustee: Banhoek Conservancy. “The idea is to generate work for the community, while socially and environmentally uplifting the whole Banhoek Region. Riders can look forward to experiencing brand new single track through land that on any other day will not be open to the public, breathtaking vistas and spectacular wine tasting on route”.

Thanks, although have a buddy going through tomorrow to collect his number so will sign the necessary and get him to collect ours. Dont want to risk it..

They should have this information on the website to be honest, and at least answer calls or reconfirm the registration details on the voicemail since that is probably why their voicemail is full.

Man I loved every minute of it. The singletrack was heaven. Much much easier than last year, and much better. Bring on day2.

Sheez, I didn't think it was easy... Some of the single track stuff was as or even more difficult than anything I experienced on W2W. In short, it felt longer than 65km and more climbing than the 1350m claimed. But I might be wrong as I don't use a GPS.

I might also just be feeling a little sorry for myself after a bad tumble when riding on one of those section that run on a ridge. (I HATE those things! Why can I cycle in a straight line on level ground, but ride like a drunk bastard as soon as the trail is on a ridge?!)

Anyway, I'll take a teaspoon of cement tonight & HTFU to be ready for tomorrow.

Results are on the website event page.

It was easy. Come on. The only tricky bit was the super steep climb with all the baby head size rocks which, by the looks of things, everyone walked anyway.

The singletrack was all basic, they made Jonkers into a borefest and with such long stretches of tar and flat jeep track it felt absolutely no different to any other MTB marathon.

If people found that technically challenging or difficult they need to spend more time riding their bike on trails and less time worrying how much stuff weighs and whether their helmet matches their new bottle cage.

Sorry. I sound like a sour grape and, well, to be fair I am. After all the marketing hubbub it was disappointing

I loved it. Seems most people did. Surely a race doesnt need always have to be hard, for it to be fun?

Besides, we only halfway through it. 2morrow has some serious climbs.

Tomorrow is a horse of a different colour... Some of those climbs towards the end will hurt.

Those of us without gears shall need to save a bit in the tank in order to get home smiling.

I enjoy riding my bike, I enjoy the feeling of a race, but when lines like 'Jonkershoek like you've never seen it before' get so flagrantly misused I get upset.

I expected more. The product does not match the marketing, regardless of whether it was fun or not.

But I digress and sound like one of the usual moaners and gripers which I am not...

I just feel duped and for that I am disgruntled, mostly at myself for allowing their marketing swindle to lure me in when deep down inside I knew, I knew!

Have a chill pill man. I was referring to said rocky section...  No need to be condescending about someone else's technical skills. Clearly yours are vastly superior and well done to you on that! But just because I found it tougher than expected doesn't mean I don't spend time on my bike and/or worry about the stuff you mentioned. PLEASE don't bring the roadie/surfer aggressive vibe to MTBing!

I enjoy trail riding & ride it as often as I can. Normally it's not a weak point for me, so maybe I just had an "off" day skills wise today. Still enjoyed the day & look forward to tomorrow.

Dude, if you met me you would take that aggressive thingycomment back. There is not an aggressive bone in my body.

The comment was also not directed at you persdonally.

I am super chilled and it is no disrespect to you. Skills are developed, nurtured. Things you learn by riding, pushing, trying new things. Patience and time get you those should you desire it. Some dont.

If you read my lower post you will see I unashamedly blame myself for my mutterings.

I don't want to get into a mud slinging contest of 'you said I said you said we all said' as I have some bathing and eating to do.

See you tomorrow on the jeep track! :whistling:

Super tough day dude, also much hotter today. That last climb before heading home was ridiculous.

Loved the event, just the groups were too big, and started too close together, which caused major traffic on the singletrack. At Bartinney wine estate we waited 20 minutes just to get onto the singletrack.

At least that ale was pretty good for the wait. Im pretty toasted now, legs are taking the weekend off. Never expected such tough climbs, and the last one was the straw...

I thought when going through some sections, that today will be bottlenecks galore! But still a great event and yeah, that Bothma's kop climb was insane, I was sooo thankfull my new bike is 2x10 with a 24T small ring and a 11-36 Casette, if it was not for that I wouldve probably had to get off and push.
