Mark Cavendish and Mark Renshaw to race Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 73 comments

This year, Mark Cavendish, one of Etixx – Quick-Step’s biggest, and his lead-out man, Mark Renshaw, will participate in the Cycle Tour for the first time.

The Cycle Tour attracts 35 000 cyclists to Cape Town every year and, over the past 36 years, has emerged as one of the greatest cycling events on the planet, with everyone from rank amateurs to Hollywood celebrities to top pro riders taking part.

The headquarters for Cavendish and Renshaw will be the beautiful wine estate of Klein Constantia, which is also owned by Bakala. Starting this year, Klein Constantia will be a jersey sponsor for team Etixx – Quick-Step.

As they did in 2014, Klein Constantia and Etixx-Quick-Step will host a special cocktail function and auction, and a short bike ride to support Francois Pienaar’s MAD CHARITY ™ (Make a Difference) on Friday, the 6th of March.

Mark Cavendish and five-time Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx, the undisputed greatest pro cyclist of all-time, will be guests of honour at the event.

“I’ve never been to South Africa before,” says Cavendish. “I’ve heard great things about the Cycle Tour and I’m excited about the trip. I’ve heard from a few riders who have been there before that it’s a lovely place, and a beautiful event to race. To ride with 35 000 people, that’s not something I’ve ever done in a bike race before. But I’m looking forward to it. Klein Constantia is a new sponsor of the team this year, and I want to do them and Mr. Bakala proud by going and showing my support. Also, I am happy to be associated with the charity actions they will sponsor. I’m really looking forward to visiting South Africa for the first time and taking part in a well-organised event that comes with a history of goodwill and charity attached to it.”

Poor Mark probably just got tired of the following type of conversation:

Person: " So you're a cyclist?"

Mark: " Yeah, I really enjoy it."

Person: " Have you done the Argus?"

I can beat that. It went like this

Person " so you're a cyclist"

Me " Yes"

Person. "So why don't you do the Tour de France?"

Me. "Because I'm 54 and rubbish"

Seriously good news about Cav in Argus. Hope it doesn't blow like about 1000 Km h

Ja Ja Mark. We know how it goes, Put at least 2 men together in a room and they will find something to compete over. I can just picture the elite peloton coming round the circle with a km to go and Mark saying "go ahead lads, I'll watch from the back"

The Argus maybe a little to short for him. So Nolan may have a better chance.

Theres a saying that the skill gap between a 18-handicap golfer and a scratch-golfer is just as large as the gap between a scratch-golfer and a pro.

I would argue there is a similar comparison between a Tour sprinter, a 2h50min Argus rider and a five-hour-hopeful riding his first Argus.

I reckon Manxy is off his best or past his best. He isn't the almighty sprinter he was a few years ago. Remember the guy that didn't need a lead out train?

Awesome for the race though - that'll bring plenty global attraction to ye olde cape town cycle tour argus newspaper world fun rider champs!

The difference is in the doping programs imo.

Everyone races the Argus. Position #23167 is just as important as #1

If he is RACING, then the mail issued by CSA yesterday about licensed riders in an unsanctioned race is a load of....

I reckon he'll be cruising with some corporates and those with a healthy wallet.

If I'm wrong, I'll have to EDIT my post

Climbs? the Alps are climbs... Cav will get over them, my bet is getting himself in an early break, the rest is one clever sprint and the rest will be history. The reason I say a break is the way to go, as many riders will have his race number written on there handlebars so to be such a marked man will make things rough if kept to the end. I'm sure a few locals would love to pull one over this sprint sensation... (wink wink).

Gonna be the first time ever that i watch the argus on the telly, hopefully it wont be that usual low budget crap broadcast with commentators that sound like their wives left them 30years ago, bring up the TDF commentators!! Exiting times

Strange how few people know that the Argus pulls a whole BUNCH of Euro pros every year!  They just do it very silently and out of the lime light.

If I remember correctly one of them made a break and with like a km to go started checking behind himself, getting ready to salute, then a fast approaching pack ate him up with 100m to go.

So I guess Mr. Cavendish and Renshaw won't be riding the CTCT after CSA's stunt not to sanction the event?

There goes THAT PR exercise....

CSA is a representative body of UCI. All rides should be sanctioned by that body. Especially if UCI riders want to take part. Not just an SA thing. Big issue in USA especially in MTB'ing.

There are bigger politics at play with PPA not wanting to be part of/sanctioned by CSA.

As always, all parties have the interests of cycling at heart !!!!!!
