Kleinhans and Reid join new Team Spur

By Press Office · 58 comments

Swiss Cape Epic legend Ariane Kleinhans and South African Cross-country Mountain Bike Champion James Reid have joined forces with Spur Steak Ranches to create a new mountain bike team for the 2016 season.

Team Spur will pursue a local and international race calendar that includes the Absa Cape Epic as well as the UCI World Cup Series in 2016. Both athletes will compete to earn national selection from their respective federations at the UCI World Championships in June and July, while James will also keep his eyes firmly fixed on racing in South African colours at the Rio Olympic Games in August.

The sponsorship deal also sees the world-class duo become ambassadors for Spur’s highly successful Schools Mountain Bike League. The League has experienced tremendous growth in just six years – in 2015 over 10 000 scholars from more than 400 schools took part in cross-country races around the country.

“The Spur Schools MTB League allows kids to participate as individuals and in teams, vital for the holistic development of children,” said Sacha du Plessis, Group Marketing Executive at Spur Corporation. “This year, the creation of Team Spur and sponsorship of James Reid and Ariane Kleinhans is the natural progression in our MTB development journey as well as an affirmation of Spur’s continued investment into the sport. Our objective is to introduce our many young participants to the elite athletes of their sport, who are currently living their dreams. We seek to build greater self-belief in kids across South Africa – with the right attitude and dedication, being a professional mountain biker is not only possible, but great fun too! It makes the task a little easier in that James and Ariane are superb people who also love giving back to kids.”

Team Spur is proudly supported by Specialized Bicycles. Ariane will continue to ride Specialized’s flagship S-Works Era and James the S-works Epic model. The S-Works bikes have been key to the athletes’ successes over the past year and form an integral part of their high-performance goals in 2016 and beyond.

“I’m extremely grateful to Sacha and Spur for their belief in us and their investment in the great sport of mountain biking,” said Kleinhans. “Not only does Team Spur allow me to take my racing career another step forward, it also provides a fantastic platform for us, as professional athletes, to inspire the youth to follow their passion. It truly gives a deeper meaning to my life as an athlete.”

“2016 will be my biggest year yet as a professional mountain biker. I’ve finally completed a four-year BCom degree and I’m going all in!” said Reid. “My first attempt at the Absa Cape Epic as well as my qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics is going to take hard work and focus and I’m incredibly honoured to have the backing of a world-class brand like Spur in these pursuits. I look forward to engaging with the Spur Schools League and being a part of the youth development of cycling.”

The rumor of Arianne and Erik divorcing alone is more worrying to me than the RECM team breaking up.

Its called life and no one but their business. You really shouldnt lose sleep over it.

Ariane is also primarily an XCM rider.

Reid was brought into the RE:CM fold as their XCO specialist, with everyone else focussing on XCM events.

Yes she WAS, now she is focusing on XC for 2016.

Erik is not.

the long-term sponsorship of the team was summarily ended.

That would mean it folded.

When you throw in rumours of a divorce between 2 top team pros into the mix, there are more - legitimate  - questions about what's really going on...

As mentioned its called life and not every marriage lasts, yet all year they carried on very professionally. So much that 80% of the public had no idea. Their problems / differences had nothing to do with RECM stopping their sponsorship with the team.

There is nothing really going on unless you ask this of every single team sponsorship that does not carry on for a lifetime.

None of the above is in any way a " **** way of looking at life", as you succinctly put it.

Your view.

Just curious because I think there is more to the RECM story. Doesn't mean I don't support them so no need to get on high horses and make sweeping emotional statements.

What is more? RECM were in financial problems and couldnt afford the sponsorship? The time came to a end and RECM got what they wanted out of it like MTN? Erik and Arianne had some personal issues? James hated soda water that the team was supplied with? Nico was tired of giving free tubes out his shop to the team?

There is your more.

Uhm... I'm not. Said that because it was nice to see a married couple, riding at the top of the sport together.

Had the opportunity to meet them both at the launch of RECM's team announcement earlier this year. If the rumor is true it will be sad news indeed.

Saw on another thread that Erik and Arianne is not married anymore so that would explain quite a lot...

Sad to hear of those rumours. Sometimes being in business with your SO isn't such a great idea.

Glad that Ariane and James have a great sponsor's to support them in their racing careers.

None of the above, I heard there were problems with how the team was managed, short while later the sponsorship ended abruptly. Who knows, maybe it was just a bad rumour and the only reason was just RECM financial issues but no reason to get so offended by a simple question.

Anyway, seemingly none of us know more anyway so question answered.

So sorry if this is a doff question but this means they will ride Epic as Team Spur and try win the mixed title, but what is the prize money for that? Competition at the 2016 Epic will be much more muted with many pros opting to concentrate on the Olympics.

I asked Erik when his "lovely wife" was coming back to SA when I saw him at Ashburton Dullstroom event and he replied me "the problem is, shes not my lovely wife anymore". It is very sad.

Good for Erik for getting to ride with Topeak Ergon. Great team and it can only improve his riding. Also good to see Ariane with a new Sponsor, always been one of my favourites

Might be good for Ariane to be more focused on XCO. Gunn-Ritha Dahle and Annika Langvad are more XCO oriented and they've both done extremely well with Marathon races, both of them having won the XCM worlds and Annika a two-time Epic champ

The borders between the 2 disciplines are not so obvious anymore. I reckon Schurter can win the epic with a strong partner any day. He was clearly the strongest rider 2 years ago. Same with Kulhavy. Well, Hermida will probably get podium as well if he does not pack bad luck like seems to be the case every year for him.

I think Arianne might do well in XC and I am very sure Reid will do well in both disciplines

It seems to me that women are more amenable to preforming well in multiple disciplines, whereas the guys don't or can't.. There are the few exceptions but with women mtb'ers you see some of them doing well on the road, mtb, cyclocross etc. (prime example being PFP and MV) and women like Annika excelling consistently both with marathons and XC.  Also women seem to have longer longevity in the sport (ie Gunn-Ritha).

With the guys the top XC dawgs have to watch themselves from peaking too early with the Epic, and it seems less of them have it on their calenders lately.

Or could it just be that the women field is not so strong compared to men? So men have to specialise and put their effort into one discipline to get some silverware

True to some extent but if you look at the top true contenders in the XC for men and woman the field for both is limited to about  4.

But when you see the top female XCO athletes in action, giving it total horns for an hour and a half, its hard to say they are not "strong" or as tough as the men.

It's just different between the genders, physiologically anyway.

Arianne is riding the Cape Epic with Annika Langvad. Remember the rules have changed to allow two riders from different teams with different sponsors to team up

Are either of this team going to take on the UCI WC?

SA sadly lacking up there since Burry's tragic departure, cant remember seeing Arrianne on any XCO start list recently, although she wouldn't be flying SA colours, she would be p against formidable Swiss riders.

What about SA team for the  Olympics? Perhaps that's another topic.

Arianne competed in a XCO WC round, can't remember which one, and she finished 12th or something. So she could do pretty well if she actually focused on XC.

How embarrassing to be associated with a franchise that promotes itself through cultural misappropriation.

South Africa does not have the same level of political correctness (thank goodness) as the USA. While the Spur imagery is offensive to many Americans it does my have the same significance in SA.

Our venacular includes terms like coloured to describe a person of mixed race. In the USA that would be highly offensive. In SA its accepted.

Same with guys cycling in Lycra showing their knees. In some cultures that's offensive as men should not show their un-covered legs. With all of this you have to consider culture and location.

Sheesh there are a lot of joy goblins in this place. This is a good news item, a wonderful thing and all some of you can do is skinner and put it down. Who cares what happened at recm. Spur has obviously put its money where it's mouth is and stepped up to the plate.

I don't eat at spur but respect their decision to positively impact my sport.
