Kevin Evans accepts doping charge

By Press Office · 1614 comments

Cycling South Africa reports that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has charged mountain bike cyclist, Kevin Evans with doping after identifying serious irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) – a profile of the athlete’s blood parameters.

Mr. Evans accepted the charge of doping and did not contest the findings. The ABP is a longitudinal analysis and the suspicious readings were identified over a period of time, therefore the athlete’s results extending back to 14 March 2014 will be disqualified, with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

He will be banned from sport for four years as of 4 March 2015 until 3 March 2019. The athlete has however indicated that he has retired from professional cycling.

Cycling South Africa respects the independence of the SAIDS process. Cycling South Africa further reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness and extensive testing programmes.

There is another option. He could have been in on it the whole way. Lots of the players from trek, Nike, Oakley etc. made a packet riding the Lance Inc. wave, and have been fingered for doing nothing when they could have known.

Kevin Evans has sold a metric crapload of bikes for Brandon. Go back ten years and see how many Raleighs were on the road/trails. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday simple bike marketing strategy.

There is no evidence to say Kevin has been doping for 10 years- just good results, it could have been just when he teamed up with DG and they took winning the Epic (for south Africa, nogal) to an obsessive level. It could have been at the tail end of his career as ability dropped. All speculation in the public eye.

Either way, Brandon seems to have been behind a huge part of Kevin's career and obviously has a vested interest in how this has turned out. The fact that he has come out swinging against the vindicated doubters shows a lot.

Those sales were not driven by Kevin, Microsoft cycling team as a whole would of done significantly more. If Kevin sells bikes howcome then Volcon never ever took off as well as Merckx bikes in this country as he rode both?

What wins on Saturday does not sell on Monday. Its been proven before. Marketing and value for money sells, back int he day Raleigh was really good value for money.

Just a Fandacious one :P

Someone putting themselves out there doesn't require stalking...it's all in the open for everyone to see...let's not start something that could go pear shaped as it normally does....as I pointed out I have no issue with him....I do however find the entire drama very intriguing.....

Has it been established that Kevin was doping prior to his medical problems?

Has it been established that he was consistently doping?

Or has it been established that he was doping post medical procedures?

Its all getting confusing because fact seems to be diluted by speculation and I stopped following this thread many many many pages back

Wondering about this too and the most relevant questions to ask I feel.

exactly.. Microsoft Raleigh mtn energise etc etc sold a crapload of road bikes. With kev ev as the face of raleigh mtb they sold a crapload of off road. There were probably more Raleighs than Giants on the trails, at the time and you can't say that kev winning xc and marathon titles had nothing to do with it.

They were bikes with no character, but represented damn good bang for buck. Probike understood the local market very well, and then dominated it credit to Brandon on that one.

I don't think he won much on a Volcan, but for a nothing brand cyclelab sure did shift a few.

You could also look at the amount of spaz bikes out there when burry was a GT rider.

Fair enough - brand awareness & sales not necessarily the same thing

Out of interest, you remember that Kevin Evans rode Volcon and Merckx bikes even though it happened aeons ago and the bikes not taking off - I would say that is a pretty good argument for how putting a pro on a your bike creates brand awareness!

I just had an ultimate face plant moment watching last week's episode of SuperCycling this morning with coffee in hand:

Owen (a doper) discussed Kevin (a doper) with Andrew who spoke about Rourke (a doper) - next item was the launch of Team Telkom being led by Nolan (a doper).

Sheeeeeeeeeet man.

How to toilet your name, and that of Rush Sports in one fell swoop. If I was in Brandon's shoes I would have used the opportunity to distance myself (and my company) from a confessed doper and I would have initiated legal action to recover some of the sponsorship I have provided to the doper (I am sure that there would have been a doping clause in the contract of some sort).

@My stuff - I agree

I've chosen not to get involved in this as I was a previous fanboy and defended Kev. I've chosen also not to get involved as this mud flinging on the hub has almost been as bad as the one between the riders.

Gary, I wouldn't be surprised(just guessing) if Brandon E knew. Which is why it hurts all the more and can't really distance himself from it. I'm not saying he funded it purposefully, but Its a bit like the Mike Ross from "The Suits" thing. If you knew and didn't blow the whistle you have dirt on you and that is why this has taken so painfully long to come out?

For example..

Brandon Steward Rode 2007 Epic with Kev, Team MTN/ Energade - Raleigh was in its heydays, Dave George was a Road pro in the same team If I recall correct. Impey was also on that team? In 2011 Steward and Darren Lill rode the JBerg2C together although they clearly had a fallout some time after that. My point is all our old pros know each other well enough to know who is "juicing"..Especially if they did team camps together etc.

I was a big fanboy and ignorant of the "ugly" that was beneath a obviously very nice guy until a young current up-and-coming-pro spilt the beans over a cup of coffee a few years back.

Apparently some of the guys are so arrogant about the stuff, that they tell you to go get yourself a beer from the same fridge their stash is kept in and expect you not to tell. (This particular person has not even been caught/found guilty yet but I'm sure its next as CSA prob just don't have the means to fight all these cases at the same time)

Most of you would obviously have been the hero, but If I was a young up and comer I'd probably also be to scared to tell...I mean If you want to Blow the whistle loud enough for it to matter, you'd better be well prepared for the SH1TSTORM you'll have to face with so many people in the industry that are in on the whole thing not to speak of dirty riders that haven't been caught yet..the Lance thing. We have all learnt that..

But its no wonder it feels so damn good to finally be proven right - Fand, Darren etc

Anyway that's my 2c..

One has to be careful with words these days as lots of people have found out, I'm merely a previous fan boy who has learnt that people will always disappoint even our heros.  But I'll always ride my bike ;)

TheOldC**tBiker (why does it keep doing that?) has been hammering hard on Twitter about my relationship with Moneyweb.

I don't really believe he is so dim-witted to think Moneyweb shares all of my opinions. Thus, I can only assume he is attacking what he perceives to be my livelihood.

What I find fascinating is how muted Brandon is in his condemnation of Kevin's behaviour.

Let's take the most flattering scenario: Kevin saw first-hand how David's actions harmed the sport and hurt his team mates. Yet despite this he raced without a TUE, knowing he could get popped and do the same harm. I stress that this is the most flattering scenario. My suspicion is that the truth is much less flattering.

Oh, and apparently I'm a "well known cycling web forum troll". Did you guys know this?

Ta thanks wired

Noted!

Oldcoot is actually a hell of a good guy and a personal mate of mine - possibly was a bit naive about doping (not any more), but exceptionally loyal to his athletes who committed to being clean (and if they were not clean then they definately lied to him) - I have no doubt he will do what he needs to do to move this forward appropriately - he IS one of the good guys.
