Introducing the Newlands Forest to Constantia Nek mountain bike trail

By Bike Hub Features · 89 comments

We joined the Table Mountain MTB Forum for the opening of the new mountain bike route linking Table Mountain and Constantia Nek, through Newlands Forest, Kirstenbosch and Cecilia Forest. Check out the pictures and route details below.

The new trails opened to mountain bikers today link the existing Table Mountain trails around Rhodes Memorial to Constantia Nek. This has come about after years of negotiation between SANParks and interested parties.

ccs-58780-0-96393200-1480596772.jpg

To follow the trail, riders need to exit the Table Mountain trails at Rhodes Memorial and follow the M3 bike path towards Newlands Forest. As always, please be aware of pedestrians and dogs as this is a very popular walking and running route. After the entrance to the parking for Newlands Forest, riders need to follow signage and take a right turn up the next road. You will then come to a locked gate: the code for the combination lock is on the back of the signage, it is important to note this.

ccs-58780-0-81152000-1480596776.jpgRemember that the password for the lock on the gate is on the route signage

From here the trail climbs steadily, and there are some interesting technical sections to keep your climbing (or descending) skills sharp. Before entering Kirstenbosch at the top of the climb, there is a steep downhill which for most will be a portage section.

Kirstenbosch have put in some serious work to the trails traversing the gardens, there are bridges, the trails are bedded with woodchips, and have a good flow. Be warned however, that there are some very steep sections.

ccs-58780-0-80340000-1480597433.jpgLuckily some of the steeper climbs are paved

After following the upper jeep track path through Kirstenbosch, you will enter Cecilia Forest on a purpose built trail lined with woodchips. Your legs may be protesting a bit by now, but most of the climbing is done, and the views are absolutely incredible.

ccs-58780-0-79996000-1480597462.jpgDon’t forget to enjoy the view as you enter Cecilia Forest

The final stretch to Constantia Nek is on jeep tracks, commonly used by hikers and dog walkers, so please be aware and considerate, and resist the temptation to bomb too fast around blind corners.

You have the option of continuing to the Constantia Nek Circle for a coffee a La Parada, or taking a left turn at the fork to head down to the cork tree trails alongside Rhodes Drive, where you can follow the trail all the way to the Cecilia Forest car park or pop over Rhodes Drive at the Southern Cross Drive intersection to connect to the greenbelt network that links to Tokai.

For the Cape Town MTB Community. I had an incident this morning in Cecelia forest with a walker and his dogs. I was coming down along one of the demarcated cycling roads and saw a walker and his dogs and slowed down accordingly. As I came to pass the walker at a slow pace he started yelling at me and said "I'm carrying a gun and if you hurt one of my dogs I will shoot you".

And he's the one who is actually breaking the law

Please can I ask the MTB community to be courteous, gracious and thankful to the walkers who we are now sharing trails with. Doug Bird posted a video on trail etiquette about 10 days ago which is worth a watch.

It is clear that the walking community is not happy with the MTB community. Lets win them over through our attitude and behavior as we share the trails, give them right of way, let them know you see them, and don't race the new sections that we can now ride that have been walking only up until now.

Quite sad that such people exist. Treating walkers with respect becomes all the harder when you have rogues like this a**hole around. Not to mention the less than friendly but not as violent as this turd, grannies.

Carrying a gun in the park is illegal as someone else has pointed out and the threat to the rider is also an offence, probably in terms of the Firearms Control Act.

Saw a signpost at the top of Southern Cross Drive yesterday that was clearly maliciously removed.  Tried to push it back in, but the hole was f*cked.  Clearly someone pulled it out / threw it down.

I am think we should start a campaign to ban walkers and dogs from all the trails until they learn how to behave properly. They are vandals and clearly capable of violence. Their animals foul the environment and they do no trail maintenance or funding of the areas they walk in.

How ironic when the shoe is on the other foot.

So enjoying this new loop....that rubber mat on the corner of the single track sure works great thanks to the installers.

The Steep portage is taking a bit of a beating from guys climbing with bikes on their shoulders wearing cleats.that and an escape route to the Cecilia parking and this trail will be 100%.

I decided to finally do this this morning, didn't check the maps, but joined at the top of southern cross after riding up the green belt.

Should have checked the maps, as when I just joined the trail went the right direction and followed the signs to Cecillia you get spat out on the tar. kinda sucks, but at least i got to go past zillions of cars queueing in rhodes drive from kirstenbosch to the M3 - ha ha

is there any way to enter this from within kistenbosch gardens?

No. Bikes are not allowed within Kirstenbosch. We are only allowed to use the demarcated through-way on the uppermost level, meaning you have to enter from Constantia Neck or Newlands, and then keep going past Kirstenbosch.

I assume that if you crash or break down, and need an escape route, you are allowed to walk yourself and your bike out via Kirstenbosch, but not ride.

Personally, I think an official access point / route, about halfway will be a great bonus as it will open this trail to a lot more people, especially youngsters or the unfit, because doing the whole thing is a fairly tough ride, not suited for those riders.

For some reason I thought this was a pretty sedate family ramble type trail. Rode it the other week from my crib to Rhodes, up n' over to Constantia and had to turn around and ride back home in the other direction. Jeez, a couple of those climbs are tough... especially the Muur actually in K/bosch. Wasn't expecting that at all.

Couple of super fun sections near the end and a great asset to the local trail network. Hammer that a few times a week and you'll get nice and strong.

Done it twice now. Even better with the whole route ridable now.

Just one question: how does 2 way traffic work on some of those single track sections with no visibility around the corners??

I think the top comment speaks to the bottom comment...  :w00t:

With car traffic, it's the car coming down that has ROW... but with bikes, getting started on a steep incline isn't as easy as nifty clutch-work...

Tell.me about it! Had to do exactly the same past week due to time constraints, only to find out I was only 200m & 20m climbing from the top. Bah!

But it's an awesome lower section. Some tricky sections to climb and some lekker little rock gardens. Wet AF ad well which adds to the complexity

Up has ROW unless otherwise stipulated. Tokai is an example of a trail centre that stipulates Down has ROW. Mostly cos we (committee and trail builders) all prefer to have uninterrupted descents vs uninterrupted climbs. And it's good technique training to start again on an up. :P

I don't mind giving ROW going either way, I just think it might be a bit late to give ROW once I've collided with someone because neither of us knew what was around the corner...

As long as the one coming down is cautious and keep a sharp bead for guys coming up you should have no issues. Coming up will always be slower and you have to look ahead either way as that single track is tricky, especially with the little drop off on the side. You don't want to go over at any of those spots. Had two way traffic a few times and the guys were always pretty easy to wait and let pass. Great trail. Kudos to the builders, especially now that portage section is bypassed.

I've ridden this whole trail plenty times. Didn't find any dog poo issues. Cyclists are always moving at a higher pace and we should as a rule just be more watchful, especially round bends, be prepared to slow as soon as you see walkers and take extra care when there's pets around. Walkers love this area because they able to let the dogs free of a leach, but this also means elevated opportunity for an unfortunate meeting, so lets not get all high and mighty and just practice peace and patience. We all have to give it time to get used to the new changes. I'm already finding lots of understanding from fellow users of all persuasions.

No issues here. ROW is yours, as the chances are good I've run out of talent anyway, so no sense in bailing in front of you...

Did the route again yesterday afternoon as part of my monthly 'work' visit. Even more beautiful than previously! Amazing what a bit of rain can do. And a rainbow. And it helped that my bike was actually working this time.

Never heard of any incidents yet, so safe enough. Visit mostly in the morning, but both running or cycling always met people along the way. Go for it.

Is ROW actually an issue on a dual use path? Surely nobody has ROW and everybody needs to be courteous and polite to everybody. If both up and down stop and say 'you go', 'No you go'.. etc it is a good showing.

In Tokai it is different as they are Bike only trails, but on a shared use network, decency and manners count for a billion times more than who has right of way. In fairness it's the dogs, because they are dogs and they are rad and they want to smell stuff and if you ride into one you are a total ass hat

Safe as houses - just be courteous and aware of walkers especially during this season.
