GoPro captures gunpoint mountain bike robbery in Somerset West

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 271 comments

Malcolm Fox was bikejacked at gunpoint during a ride in Somerset West on Saturday, 31 May 2014. Unbeknownst to the thieves the events were all captured on his GoPro and the footage used as evidence against them.

From Malcolm Fox’s YouTube video:

MTB ride on Saturday 31st May 2014 from Ongegund, last few km’s before end of session. Armed gunman and 2 others stopped myself and took cellphone, car keys, oakleys and bike.

Fortunately they did not have a clue what a GOPRO was and this is the evidence that will assist in their prosecution!

Hi,

not sure if this was mentioned, but the guy actually mentioned on the radio that he had veered off the proper route as he missed one of the sign boards. Irrespective...he had the right reaction. There was a thread a while back regarding self defence while on the bike...and this is a perfect example of how taking Krav Maga(or whatever classes) for 6 weeks would give you a false confidence in thinking you can defend yourself against any assailant....and then out pops another 2 assailants....and there goes whatever skills you think you had from couple of self defence classes( i however think everyone should learn some sort of self defence)! best defense is to get away! I've been shot before in a similar situation, however...I decided to wrestle with the assailant, instead of giving the assailant my cheap ass cellphone...a football career was ended.

Best defence is to create distance between you and the assailant...period!

Well done on staying calm Mr Malcolm!

I support fully what you say, people need to do some form of self defence.

Why ?

A dong with a very valid point, go and ride the Irene area and see if they will take your bike off you so easily.

If they have a gun, Ill give them everything without asking question... I'm not willing to get shot over a bike! I'm not stupid

The day is going to come when an armed cyclists gun goes off by accident and he will be the victim of his own ways. The reason these thieves have guns is bacause they steal them. So if we have less guns then there are less to steal.

Why do think America is so bad? They all think they have the right to own 20 firearms. And then... low and behold some lunatic gets a hold of one of them and goes mad.

Didn't the person who invented the AK 47 kill himself because of all the damage that thing has caused? I am 100% against all guns. They do not represent a human society.

Aha so when one day (I know this will NEVER happen to you) a few of these nice gentleman walks into your house armed with their unlicensed firearms I suppose you first gonna sit down and have coffee with them before they proceed to rape your wife and daughters and drown you son in a bathtub full of boiling water ?

You simply cannot compare the two situations.

There is a time and place to put it all on the line and while your example probably is one of those times what happened in the robbery that started this thread is not.

Yeah , and I have almost repeated myself to deaf ears here for people not to act like heroes, but bottom line is this, sort these okes out good and proper and they run for the hills.

Correct.. they run when the sheriff moers them, and they shoot when the chubby guy klaps them

Look, I'll be honest.... Stealing a bike IMO is not worth the death penalty, so unless someone is really giving me the impression that they are unstable enough to kill me, I wouldn't like to kill someone for my bike.

Times are tough, crime is a symptom of these struggles.... If someone wants to steal my bike to feed his family and I put a cap in between his eyes I wont be able to live with myself. Even junkies have families who care about them.

 ok this must surely be one of the funniest posts in a long time !!! People that want to feed their families do not steal funny enough , people that want to buy drugs and people that are to lazy to work steals !!

If hard work was the pre-requisite to getting a job I know of a couple of people who shouldn't be unemployed right now.

Any way, I just created a scenario to carry my point. Fact is, you don't know what other people are going through, putting a cap between there eyes isn't a solution to anything. In a sick way, theft can be noble, depending on your perspective.... Think robben Hood.... Lol, how's that for funny ?

Malcolm did the right thing at the time. Nobody will say differently. We all have our own opinions and nothing is goinfg to change that.

Many here are quick to add things to the scenario like guys hiding in the bushes behind you etc.

Let's take this scenario, and forget about Malcolm, and let's escalate the level of violence and add the following:

Rider riding with his girlfriend or wife. Robbery takes place and the perps decide to sexually molest or rape her. Now this actually did happen to the brother and sister in kempton park 2 years ago, so this is a reality and has happened.

What would your comments be now on this situation?

There may come a time in your life where you will be faced with escalated violence and you may have to fight for your life. My whole puprose of posting was to make you all aware that you can control the outcome of a violent attack. yes you will get away with not been harmed most of the time. but that 1 time...

If that's the reality you live in, then it's time to move.

Who has a kettle big enough to fill a bathtub of boiling water? Or are we talking missonary version #14 potjie pot over a fire?

Shebeen did you give your brain cell to somebody else for the day or are you just trying to say something . A good friend of mine was shot dead by these bastards and then while his wife watched they filled the bath tub with hot water (WDF boils a kettle to fill a tub ) and drowned her 11 year old son in it . So please why don't you step out of your little bubble .

if that is the case, then it was naive not to state it upfront. What reaction did you expect to your first Rambo-type post? Your ascertion that you could have just shot these three guys and walked away without being charged probably doesn't come with a 200% guarantee either.

beyond that, next weekend i'm off to a bachelors that involves mountain biking then shooting AK47s in a range.

Will report back about the possible combinations.

There are many here who are quick to judge, without knowing what the posters background is. But hey this is the HUB and anything goes. One does not post a CV upfront when posting.

I just sigh when people see the self defence requirements as a grey area. It is actually cut and dried. In this instance use of deadly force would be justified on the armed attacker. I bet someone will differ, and that is why they don't carry.

Enjoy the shoot. The AK47 is a remarkable weapon and shoots pretty nicely. Just remenber one day on the range firing a few rounds don't make you competent to deal with a situation.

and remember firearms and alchohol do not go well together.
