Backyard Bike Checks: Show Your Bike Some Love and Win

By Bike Hub Features · 217 comments

For the past few years, the Bike Hub crew have been bringing you Bike Checks from the Cape Epic.

Since things didn’t quite go according to plan this year, we thought we’d turn the focus on the many bikes now confined to garages or spare rooms, dreaming of a life beyond Zwift.

Introducing Backyard Bike Checks

Yep, it’s pretty much what it says on the box. You showing your bike some love by showing it off (and giving it a wash first). Take some photos of it in your backyard, on a balcony, your spare room or on a couch… anywhere really as long as it is at home.

Update: We’ve extended the competition end date until 30 April 2020 and announced our first winner. Details below.

How to get involved

  1. Give your bike a wash (if it’s not already clean)
  2. Take some photos
  3. Upload at least three photos to the Forum thread on Bike Hub or on social media tagging Bike Hub on Facebook or @bikehubber on Instagram or Twitter. Be sure to use the hashtag #backyardbikechecks.
  4. (Optional) Tell us a little more about your setup and upgrades

Win one of two Muc-Off hampers

Keep your bike in top shape even after lockdown with some goodies from Muc-Off. One lucky participant will win a hamper of bike care products.

that's a pretty awesome quiver you got there!

all i need is an explanation for what the SS in DewaldsSS stands for, cause it sure ain't SingleSpeed

S for my surname and ss for the singlespeed jump bike I used to ride when I was younger.

Never considered changing my username

Factory team rider HBomb's custom Muna Sparkle 16" SS destroyer!

Steel is real, frame come through the ranks scoured from Gumtree and ridden in by his older sister.

Graduated to it when legs were long enough to reach the pedals.

Inspiration for bike was from Gulf Racing colours/what they had at builders.

Nipper riders have small hands and fingers, and the supplied brakeset are practically useless. Adult version V-brake with setting dialled in to close reach and pull right at grips. Can do a stoppie if you have the balls. Upgraditis on this bike would be discs.

post-1830-0-54165800-1588149860_thumb.jpg

adult sized grips work, and make the bike go faster (when colourcoded)

post-1830-0-39984500-1588149875_thumb.jpg

Custom name was devised by Rider and mechanic/sponsor. Translates to forestfast, which is what we want to do. Mom still needs to do the headtube badge.

this beaut came stock off le bikehub classifieds. Was a well used but well cared for bike, Bjorn had done all the hard work to make it work better than standard.

post-1830-0-57965500-1588156373_thumb.jpg

believe it or not, this alu thrasher with fork and gears weighs LESS than the smaller steel bike preceding it!

cheap light strong is VERY evident with small wheels (although i think they're all too strong)

post-1830-0-61911100-1588156384_thumb.jpg

8 gears using Shimano's trusted tourney RD gets you up steeper hills without walking and faster on the flats without spinning out. Still working on making gripshift shift easier.

Nice ad on of a chain guide and bottom pulley so it NEVER slips off.

post-1830-0-91639200-1588156391_thumb.jpg

a bike computer! so much extra fun, and has been moved to back wheel so that IDT can be used with something better than Peppa pig to watch. silicone grips just get cut down to size.

The whole point of doing this photoshoot was an excuse to teach kids how to clean bikes properly!

so even if we don't win, mission accomplished.

Dad's rig got a shower too.

post-1830-0-32145100-1588156896_thumb.jpg

basically stock standard RM Vertex 990 (2014 model i think).

Also of lehub classifieds.

love this bike, it just goes and goes and goes.

Never thought I'd take a carbon hardtail adventure racing and bundu bashing, but have thrown alles at it and it's fine for more still.

adjustments for adventure racing/long distance riding

post-1830-0-78211200-1588156909_thumb.jpg

Still on 2x10, because well i think it works just fine, but got a shorter gearing on crankset to get up steeper hills.

Bar ends, because i don't care what people think/say comfort comes first and for me this is still the best addition you can put on a bike if you're looking at spending hours on it.

post-1830-0-19926500-1588156917_thumb.jpg

Saddle - see above on form vs function thinking. This WORKS for me bigtime, and i care fokol what people think (although it looks like spaz power saddles kind of have similar thinking).

and wow, it's carbon too! Leather has been recovered by the builder,

Little trick to the back to fit the high volume 2.35 Maxxis with enough clearance.

Thompson 740 carbon bar.

Dropper still to come and maybe a 120mm fork.

Please add the ability to upload images from mobile where i don’t have to hack my way around viewing the site as desktop. Also this doesn’t work when i take a photo with my phone. The 2mb upload limit and lack of support for HEIC and HEIF makes it impossible.

If you can implement this on the classifieds, you can implement it on the forum.

It's in the pipeline. Admittedly, the pipeline is rather congested at present. It will happen when we bring the ageing Forum platform into this decade. This is pencilled in for early-ish next year.
