Backyard Bike Checks: Show Your Bike Some Love and Win

By Bike Hub Features · 217 comments

For the past few years, the Bike Hub crew have been bringing you Bike Checks from the Cape Epic.

Since things didn’t quite go according to plan this year, we thought we’d turn the focus on the many bikes now confined to garages or spare rooms, dreaming of a life beyond Zwift.

Introducing Backyard Bike Checks

Yep, it’s pretty much what it says on the box. You showing your bike some love by showing it off (and giving it a wash first). Take some photos of it in your backyard, on a balcony, your spare room or on a couch… anywhere really as long as it is at home.

Update: We’ve extended the competition end date until 30 April 2020 and announced our first winner. Details below.

How to get involved

  1. Give your bike a wash (if it’s not already clean)
  2. Take some photos
  3. Upload at least three photos to the Forum thread on Bike Hub or on social media tagging Bike Hub on Facebook or @bikehubber on Instagram or Twitter. Be sure to use the hashtag #backyardbikechecks.
  4. (Optional) Tell us a little more about your setup and upgrades

Win one of two Muc-Off hampers

Keep your bike in top shape even after lockdown with some goodies from Muc-Off. One lucky participant will win a hamper of bike care products.

'02 Wheeler 4100

I've only had this bike for a couple of months and have done about 1000km's with it.

It was a "Garage Find" when I visited a client of mine. I Saw it by accident covered with a ton of dust.

He didn't want any money for it, said if I wanted it I can take it. Obviously I did.

I Don't know the exact age of this bike but he told me he had it since '02 hence me calling it a '02 model.

The only two parts that is not original is the handle bar and stem. The biggest tire that would fit into the frame was a 25 so I made a slight modification to fit a 28. I Stripped it down completely, cleaned and serviced every part and put it back  together again. She cleaned up pretty good and is actually in pretty good nick. Also rides like a dream.

Shimano Sora 3x8 groupset

Cycling

OK, so I was involved in my first crash with a motorist on 12 March 2020. Needless to say it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. Doctor said I will be off the bike for 6 - 8 weeks. The whole incident knocked my cycling completely, I considered selling my bike and get back into PC Gaming again...

Luckily I have a good cycling friend who is on my case to prevent me from doing this and I am thankful for his friendship.

Browsed through my library of memories from the cycling and the nostalgic hit me very hard. It will be a stupid move to sell my bike and leave cycling because it only provided good things in return.

Awesome new friends, coffee shops, amazing views, suffering and not to mention the health benefits too! And overall well-being.

So here goes:

"Show your bike some love and win"

You asked and I will show.

My Pyga has had a rough life (she thinks so as all kids do). Having been raised as one of many many children, she often had to compete with the beauty of her Colnago sisters, the prestige of her US postal Trek of a brother and the waif thin 7.4kg Open hardtail that was the apple of her father's eye. Living amongst these beauties was not easy and one day the Stage decided that standard colours just wouldn't do so she went out and got herself a radiant paint job. Glitter infused purple gloss paint that would be at home on the nails of a seapoint hooker and bright orange decals to match. Now her siblings had something to envy and with her new looks in hand she decided to leave her family in the Cape and find a new home (in my garage). Paint isn't everything though, you have to be clean too. I've taken the time to strip her down, clean and polish every square mm, grease the pivots and weigh every component in preparation for putting her back together.

Time for some of that love you asked for...

I swear that is the best XC bike ever (in my unbiased opinion)

that .21 kgs needs to go Nakoota

Pedals, saddle, Ti bolts and rotors (but be careful, not many rotors fit nicely with those brakes and you will comfortably dip below 11

Is it the full bike and all, or can we post just the bits we’re maintaining?

Custom built SL4 Tarmac s-works commuter.

High gloss raw carbon off-set with metallic gold.

45SL carbon rims, full carbon besides stem and handlebar, Shimano Ultegra brakes, gold chain.

Custom respray by Andrew Harris in Durban and built by Marko from TrailWolf Cycles in Pretoria.

Detailed it myself. Machine polished all clear-coated surfaces using the Rupes LHR75E, then coated with Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light ceramic coating (5 year life span), and finally topped off with Gtechniq EXO v4 hydrophobic coating (18 month life span).

6kg without pedals.

Those top coats are a micron thick, and the bike minus pedals comes in at 6kg.
