Adverse analytical finding in recent mountain bike stage race

By Matt · 878 comments

Cycling SA received notification from the UCI (International Cycling Union) of an adverse analytical finding from a sample provided by Barry Warmback on 18 March 2013 at the Absa Cape Epic.

The analytical report confirmed the presence of the steroid, Stanozolol in his sample. Barry is therefore provisionally suspended with immediate effect from competing in any event. The SAIDS (South African Institute of Drug-free Sport) process will now take its course.

Cycling SA reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with the UCI and SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness programmes and extensive testing.

Oh, and I will come clean. I am a bit of a doper. When I go dirt jumping, I am so bang all the time that I need to drink 4 hunters dry for some dutch courage. FACT!!!

That would qualify for performance enhancing.

Barry, it seems you love all this attention?

admitting to something you have done doesn't take a lot or doesn't make you "the man", especially if you are enjoying the "rush" of it all.

you shouldn't be enjoying this, you are basically making a mockery of the whole thing.

its like a school boy who boasts about being caught for doing something wrong and how many beatings he got from the principle..

I finish eating and walk with him to the UCI tent & trailer. Another arrogant guy approaches me and starts writing on a form on his clipboard, my name and race number etc. I say arrogant because he asks me to produce identification.

Just been speaking to some pro mates of mine and this seems kinda irregular. Not one of them has ever been asked to produce ID unless it's an out-of-comp test.

If I remember correctly, you must have your CSA license ON YOU at all times when you are riding.

So what does the weekend warrior do at tomorrow's Nissan?

I can just see the expression on the organisers face if I rock up with my fat arse and 5 year old bike with my G seeding number to tell them I have a TUE letter for him!!

FFS, life is WAY to complicated.

Even bigger problem.....who is going to get a TUE for their little blue pills that they use?

heheheheh

You'd most probably no better than me, but the okes I have spoken to just say you are "collared", and it works of the race number from there.

Your name is entered on the first page of the clipboard sheet, but blacked out on the copies?

Hats off for posting and admitting that it was you, especially on a place like thehub, having said that though, at the end of the day its still cheating and you need to accept the punishment, reading your posts it seems you understand this which is possibly more admirable than your confession.

I've always been extremely passionate about cycling, I raced provincially as a youngster and was very competitive finishing on the podium in almost every race, I gave up the sport that I loved at age 17 and didn't touch a bike again until 4 years ago when I decided to take up the sport again.

I came back as an average cyclist racing in the licensed vets category and generally just finish in the bunch in most races, I can tell you one thing, vets racing probably has the highest rate of performance enhancing abuse in the sport, racing is hard and it’s not uncommon to see erratic results, its difficult to ride as a clean rider when a lot of riders in the bunch are on something and a lot of the clean riders are thinking about doping especially when you’re riding so hard that you’re seeing starts and tasting blood but they don’t and there are still a lot of riders riding only on talent and still putting the dopers away, that to me is impressive, not someone getting a result because he’s cheated and lets face facts here, doping in a sport where its not paying your bills is all about ego, the health risks associated with doping are serious so I think it’s truly moronic for an amateur to dope!

I have never and will never dope and proud of it.

Noted, and accepted. Tho as you'll see from my post, the doping I did was not for cycling, and certainly not to help me towards that Epic placing. It should not have been done, or at least the fact that it had been done should have been a consideration on my part before entering the event.
