Adverse analytical finding in recent mountain bike stage race

By Matt · 878 comments

Cycling SA received notification from the UCI (International Cycling Union) of an adverse analytical finding from a sample provided by Barry Warmback on 18 March 2013 at the Absa Cape Epic.

The analytical report confirmed the presence of the steroid, Stanozolol in his sample. Barry is therefore provisionally suspended with immediate effect from competing in any event. The SAIDS (South African Institute of Drug-free Sport) process will now take its course.

Cycling SA reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with the UCI and SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness programmes and extensive testing.

Well, at least you will still be an official Epic finisher for 2013. Once the process is done and dusted, and Barry is banned.....I am sure the Epic admin guys will contact you and advise that your result of 384th is void and that you will only be listed as a solo finisher.

that will be fine, i got to enjoy 8 days of MTBaaiking with a very good friend! and the memories i have is not of finishing 384. its of suffering, laughing, riding and more riding!

It's likely these guys competed in a natural bodybuilding comp. They have those.

If those guys were tested in a 'normal' comp, they'd look like alter boys for what was found.

No, that's one of the reasons why the International Federation Of Body Building has failed at all attempts to have bodybuilding classified as an olympic sport.

Saw a doccie on tv some years ago on 'roids. What I'll never forget though is the visible differences between the "clean " bodybuilders and the juiced up guys. The clean buggers looked like little 99lbs weaklings when compared to the steroids boys.

I think that this has been a real eye-opener for many. the mid pack dopers will be really looking hard in the mirror.

For me there are only two types of dopers/

Type 1 – the accidental positives, took some cough syrup, contaminated bottle, contaminated test sample etc. These guys haven’t tried to cheat, but may or may not have had an advantage. They are in a sh1tstorm and will battle to get out without poo on their face.

Type2 – the guys who take juice to go faster. It’s part of the game and they have taken the very hard decision that the rewards outweigh the risks.

In my mind Barry wasn’t trying to cheat at cycling, so he is really a Type 1. BUT he would have known that he was taking chances by competing at a UCI grade 1 race. He is facing the music.

The real problem is the type 2 guys who pretend that they’re type 1 (steak anyone?) which make it impossible to police.

To be honest, as a social rider, I don't even know what a UCI grade 1 race is/means (i'll read up and educate myself), or that the Epic was one.

I knew it's a damn tough race, and that i'd like to do it, and that it's gonna be for free, and so i jumped at it.

Barry would you mind telling us that's never been tested more about the testing procedure?

Did they provide a special private 'room' or was it done in the loo?

Did the UCI official accompany you?

Did they strip you from say energy gels in your back pocket or your camelbak?

Thanks

Some good advice as long as you use the same doc all the time. Reckon next time I will try the same approach. My doc knows i cycle alot and race so may be he will be honest and give me ilegal stuff.

But again part of my point you have asked the doc to put the list in your file and make sure nothing is banned, but have you read the list yourself or you just hoping you have an honest doc? Like i said most of us have no clue....

I actually read up on it as well, and I use the same doc all the time - she's nice when she cuts you open, even laughs at your jokes lol :)

As an aside, she has distributed the list and website throughout the practice, so that the other couple of docs also know about it. Small step, but a step at least :)

I've read this with great interest. Well done on owning up Barry. I think that is what irks reasonable people the most about many who do wrong... If someone cuts you off in traffic and apologies you tend to let it go, it's the folk who don't apologise and those others who say "but we all do it so just let it be with no apology" that cause stores and tension. As such you have gone the first route of apologizing. You have taken it a whole step further by providing a lot of people with useable practical information so that hopefully they will not find themselves in a similar situation. Kudos and respect.

Please do let us know, if your doc or someone can shed light, on how it showed in your system so long after the fact. I know that I spent the better part of 4 years on therapeutic doses of cortisone. Have fortunately not had to take any for just over a year now, but I know it is on the wada list. I, however, value my life over clean blood tests any day. I am sure there are other people with autoimmune disorders or who have had organ transplants who would be found positive too.

To the folk firing flame throwers... The big difference here is that Barry has owned up to it instantly and is not asking for B sample to be tested even though it was 6 months after he took anything. To make a decision to go clean and change and stick to it and then find out that for whatever reason his past is still hanging around to drag him down must suck. It has nothing to do with double standards. I doubt anyone would be as angry and dissapointed in pros if said pros would just 'fess up when caught.

Guy with a clipboard approached me, youngster, probably just a casual Epic staff member. Said "im sorry to disturb you sir, but you've been randomly selected for dope control".

I asked what this means, he tells me that I need to accompany him to the UCI trailer within 15 mins to submit a urine sample.

I quietly poop in my bibs.

He tells me i can relax and catch my breath and eat my woolworths meal, but he needs to stand with me and not allow me out of his sight. He keeps his distance.

I think he smells the poop.

I finish eating and walk with him to the UCI tent & trailer. Another arrogant guy approaches me and starts writing on a form on his clipboard, my name and race number etc. I say arrogant because he asks me to produce identification.

I just got off my bicycle after a near death epic experience, and when i say i dont have any on me, he starts interrogating me as to why not and where is it and how can i not have ID on me. I give him a mouthfull on why my driver's license wasn't a requirement for me to cycle the stage. Told him to get it from the race organizers...

I'm given a cup and told to accompany a security guard to the portaloo behind the trailer and produce a minimum of 60 - 90ml of urine while he watches me produce it. Feeling a lil weird at this point but ok...

I could easily have filled a 1.5 litre bottle, but hand the 90ml sippy cup to the guard while i expend the balance of my bladder's contents in the loo.

He appreciates the warmth of the cup.

He escorts me to the front of the trailer and i climb in and sit at a table across from an official who takes down all my details etc. I open a sealed polystyrene container with 2 bottles inside marked A and B. The official touches absolutely nothing, just instructs me on what to do. Fill bottle A up to a line, then seal it with the special lid, then place it in a bag then seal that too, then slot it back into it's slot in the box.Same for bottle B. Close and reseal the box and sign the completed form. A foreign chap assumably from the UCI pops his head in to greet me and asks if this is my 1st time at drug testing. I say yes, I'm not a UCI pro athlete so i knew nothing about the testing. He chuckles and leaves, then so do i.

Thanks very much,

Is'nt having to pee in front of someone else a violation of your right to privacy? I personally would refuse to.

I wasn't at Epic but I saw the dope crowd on the finish line live cam, and to my they looked pretty similar to the schoolkid's on the other side of the finish shoot. Didn't appear to be very professional and looked like random locals...

The reason I asked is to hear how secure their testing procedure is. I mean, this is SA full of corruption and what if, just if the sample wasn't even yours, or got mixed up or what ever. Who really knows what happens to those boxes after you sealed them...

To all reading this, never have done a dope test.......DON'T "expend the balance".

Sometimes the urine's Ph is not right and you have to give a second sample. An empty bladder then means you have to sip on creamsoda for an hour or two just to get it filled again.
