Absa Cape Epic Prologue moves to Meerendal

By Press Office · 83 comments

The Absa Cape Epic Prologue will be moving from its planned venue at the University of Cape Town to Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville.

The decision follows consultation between the race management and the police over recent protests at UCT and the potential for further instability. The Prologue takes place on March 13 and was scheduled to start and finish on the UCT campus.

“It is unfortunate to make the move at this late stage, but we have to prioritise the safety of all of our stakeholders and heed the advice that we have received,” said Absa Cape Epic Chief Executive Officer Lynn Naudé. The event on the day would be attended by riders, spectators, sponsor representatives, media, staff and crew.

Meerendal previously hosted the Absa Cape Epic Prologue in 2013 and 2014 and contains a network of mountain bike trails and other suitable facilities. “We are very grateful to Meerendal owner Herman Coertze for agreeing to host us,” said Naudé. “All preparations were already in place to host the Grand Finale at Meerendal on the 20th March and our team is currently adjusting our plans to also stage a world class Prologue on the wine estate on the 13th March.”

Other than the Prologue change, the rest of the Absa Cape Epic route will stay the same and takes the race to Tulbagh, Wellington and Stellenbosch.

(See the state of the Red Phoenix after Origin of trails).

.

The irony... The very event that funds these trails also destroys them. Bennet does not pay the bills with our love of the trails alone, funds are also required and sone events contribute hugely towards the trails. The Epic are not known to pay much for trail use, so that also limits the number of suitable venues.

Wise decision... Safety first and Meerendal is the best all round choice out of very limited viable alternatives....Mathew you got some work to do ????

Interesting to see how the route pans out - Epic needs TygerbergMtb, TygerbergMtb doesn't need Epic, I cant see TygerbergMtb saying they can use the trail without some sort of undertaking to improve/ repair.

Meerendal will be a harsher, dustier intro for the foreigners - and I think with the Boland as dry as it is they will be eating dust for days this year.

Also heard Epic not overly flash with the cash when it comes to leaving the trails better than they were before. Something along the lines of the publicity the trail will get with Epic going through is such a bonus.

Wondering if their agreement with Sanparks had an escape clause, otherwise they would have paid Sanparks a chunk for no use of TMNP, no need for the pros to flash their 2 hour Activity Card purchase in promotion of Sanparks.

Plumpudding was looking like it was just about to get some attention with the heap of reddish aggregate soil dumped at the exit - would be a pity if its now left unattended.

#tubed: on that note of the dusty trails.  If the Epic entrants think that last year's Epic was dusty, they have a surprise coming unless some rains come.  The trails this year are extremely dusty and loose here in the Cape.

or a blessing if it get's used to fix up the trails and then not having a tent village full of riders coming through there before the new works can bed down properly.

Well meeries needs some work done. It is not in a good state. So for Epic to leave it as found will cost almost nothing. lol . Imagine that singletrack down to quarry.. Now that is going to take casualties..

Jip, Meerendal is spending very little time in the upkeep of their trails.

Can definately see TGMTB is not involved with that anymore.

Anyone know if the 2 Oceans has moved? FNB Varsity Cup hasn't moved has it? Importatly, will the Epic still ensure that 'the single' is maintained? To my mind, Meerendal seems to be cornering the benefits to the detriment of the broader community.

Disappointed.

There you go... we all knew it was only a matter of time before the Varsity Cup would be affected. Now that the moegoes have set their sights on the VC, is it still a bad call to move the Epic to a safer venue?

But remember the finish and end is at UCT. So a lot of people and tv right there, and imagine now the protestors rock up.

I think good call, just tired of meerendal!

Well at least I would have had a reason to lose the plot and finally rid myself of my extreme frustration levels... :whistling: :cursing:

Let the Varsity Cup players loose on the protesting savages. They're not a bunch of BA students - they'll PK them back to their senses.

Have you read the article? It says a peaceful protest ended in violence . It was the spectators that started the violence, not the protestors. So maybe moving the epic is to protect the students from violence from the spectators?

Still think it's knee jerke

Meerendal was chosen because very little time and effort is required for prep. There are permanent facilities and the space which cater for hosting an event of such a caliber. Given the short notice, Meerendal was the obvious choice. For those moaning about the quality of the trails, go watch some videos of the trails in BC and see what real mountain biking is all about. HTFU and smile.

No, the spectators stood up against an unlawful protest and things got out of hand when the spectator numbers swelled beyond the protester numbers. With a risk of the same at UCT during the Epic, there is nothing stopping BKA to mobilize to react in a similar fashion with a disruption by the Rhodesmustfall crowd during the Epic. A minimum requirement at the Epic would have been the riot squad, and thats a mood killer if there ever was one. It's not like they had to move it to another continent a la Dakar.

Anyone got a decent route map for the prologue?  I've seen the map on the Epic site but it's not very clear.

Are they going up the tar for malans?

How they crossing over into Hoogekraal etc

Trying to plan my vantage points for some photography.

They're going to go over the Burry Stander section and then up the Dortsberg single track then over the quarry in to Hoogekraal, do Hoogekraal minus the cobra and then back up past the primary school through the fields and climb Stairway to Heaven before heading in to the pump track and then the finish.

Hope that makes sense.

I was planning on going to chill up the Dortsberg single track always a good spot cheering as they climb.
